Chapter 3 - The Broken Mask

Julian stared at the silver pistol in Camila's manicured hand.

He did not feel any fear, only a blinding, overwhelming rage.

"You are incredibly stupid if you think you can shoot me in a hotel full of witnesses," Julian said calmly.

Camila chuckled and took a step closer to him.

"I do not need to shoot you," she replied smoothly.

"I just need to keep you here long enough for Marcus to dispose of the garbage."

Julian realized she was stalling to give her bodyguard time to eliminate Elena and the unborn baby.

He slowly raised his hands in a gesture of surrender.

"Who paid you to do this?" Julian asked, trying to keep her talking.

"You think you are so smart, Julian, but you never saw the true enemies standing right inside your own boardroom," she taunted.

As she spoke, Julian subtly shifted his weight to his back foot.

In one lightning-fast motion, he kicked a heavy office chair directly into her knees.

Camila shrieked in pain and stumbled backward.

Julian lunged forward, grabbing her wrist and twisting it violently until she dropped the weapon.

He pinned her against the wall and pressed his forearm heavily against her throat.

"If anything happens to my wife or my child, I will make sure you spend the rest of your life in a concrete box," he promised.

His phone buzzed in his pocket with a new text message.

His intelligence team had successfully tracked the SUV to an abandoned shipping yard on the edge of the city.

He released Camila, leaving her coughing on the floor, and sprinted out of the security room.

He bypassed the lobby and ran straight to the valet station, tossing a massive stack of cash at the attendant.

He stole the keys to a high-powered sports car and sped off into the rainy night.

He navigated the slick, dangerous city streets like a madman.

He knew he was driving straight into a deadly trap, but he did not care.

He finally arrived at the desolate, rusting shipping yard just as lightning flashed across the dark sky.

He saw the black SUV parked near a decaying warehouse, but the doors were wide open and the vehicle was completely empty.
