Chapter 9 - The Final Target

The deafening blast of the heavy shotgun tore violently through the air, shredding the wooden crates instantly.

I dove aggressively to the hard concrete, feeling the deadly buckshot barely graze the thick fabric of my shoulder.

I rolled smoothly to my feet, bringing my tactical pistol up in one fluid, practiced motion.

Daniel desperately pumped the shotgun again, his face twisted in a mask of pure, desperate hatred.

Before he could align the heavy barrel, I squeezed my trigger exactly twice.

The first bullet shattered his right knee, sending him violently crashing to the floor with a terrifying scream.

The second bullet struck the heavy shotgun, knocking it completely out of his massive, bleeding hands.

Total silence quickly descended on the warehouse as Daniel's remaining guards saw their powerful leader utterly broken on the floor.

They slowly lowered their weapons, recognizing that a new, terrifyingly capable king had just reclaimed his brutal throne.

I walked slowly over to Daniel, kicking the ruined shotgun far out of his immediate reach.

"You took five years of my life, Daniel," I stated coldly, looking down at his pathetic, bleeding form.

"Please, Grant, we were brothers," Daniel begged pathetically, clutching his shattered knee in agony.

"My brother died the day he put a bomb on this very pier," I replied without a single ounce of mercy.

I raised my pistol and fired one final, perfect shot, ending his miserable betrayal permanently.

I holstered my weapon and turned immediately back to the wooden crates.

Caroline ran out from the shadows and threw herself violently into my waiting arms.

We held each other fiercely, crying tears of absolute joy and immense, overwhelming relief.

The nightmare was finally, permanently over.

Hannah walked slowly across the warehouse floor, lowering the heavy rifle with a tired, gentle smile.

"You did perfectly, Hannah," I told her, incredibly grateful for her immense bravery.

The wail of distant police sirens began to echo loudly through the rainy city streets.

It was time to take my beautiful wife home and finally start our lives completely over again.

I led Caroline toward the warehouse exit, my arm wrapped protectively around her trembling shoulders.

I felt a profound, beautiful sense of peace knowing our family was finally whole again.

Then, Caroline suddenly stopped walking and looked up at me with fresh, terrified tears streaming down her face.

"Grant, where is she?" Caroline whispered frantically, clutching my coat.

"Where is who?" I asked, a sudden chill instantly freezing the blood in my veins.

"Emma," she sobbed hysterically. "Dr. Hale didn't take Emma; she was taken by your father."
