Chapter 3 - The House of Lies

Daniel instinctively pulled his hand away from his weapon and turned his blurry silhouette toward the heavy oak doors.
"Stay here, Grant," Daniel ordered sharply.
"I will go handle whatever that noise was."
I waited exactly three seconds after his heavy footsteps left the room before launching myself out of the chair.
My legs felt slightly unsteady, but the blurry, gray shapes around me provided just enough navigation to avoid the furniture.
I moved swiftly toward the secret wall panel hidden behind the grand fireplace.
I pressed my thumb against the concealed biometric scanner, and the heavy stone shifted silently inward.
I grabbed a loaded tactical pistol from the hidden armory rack and slipped it into my waistband.
The violent throbbing in my head was intensifying, but the gray fog in my vision was slowly beginning to take on muted colors.
I could see the deep red of the Persian rug and the dark brown of the mahogany shelves.
I stepped back into the hallway, moving with the silent, lethal grace I had perfected years ago on the docks.
I followed the sound of Daniel’s heavy boots ascending the grand marble staircase.
I stayed in his blind spot, tracking him all the way to the staff quarters in the east wing.
Hannah was kneeling on the floor, clutching a crying Lucy tightly to her chest.
Daniel was standing over them, holding a small, crumpled piece of paper in his large hand.
"Where did you find this, you little brat?" Daniel growled, stepping threateningly toward the child.
I rounded the corner and raised my pistol, aiming it directly at the center of Daniel's broad back.
"Step away from them, Daniel," I commanded, my voice echoing dangerously through the narrow corridor.
Daniel froze completely, slowly turning around to face me with a look of pure shock.
He looked at the perfectly aimed gun, then up at my eyes, trying to determine if I could actually see him.
"Put the gun down, Grant, you are totally blind," Daniel laughed nervously.
"Take one more step toward that child, and I will blow a hole straight through your heart," I promised him coldly.
Daniel slowly raised his hands, dropping the crumpled piece of paper onto the floor.
Hannah quickly snatched the paper up and hid it behind her back.
"This is a massive mistake, Grant," Daniel warned, slowly backing away toward the main staircase.
He turned and quickly descended the stairs, shouting angry orders to the security guards outside.
I lowered my weapon and turned my recovering eyes toward Hannah.
"What is on that paper?" I demanded.
Hannah slowly unfolded the crumpled document, tears streaming rapidly down her pale face.
"It is a recent bank statement addressed to Vernon Hale," she whispered, handing the paper to me.
I looked down at the blurry, bold text, my newly restored vision struggling to bring the ink into focus.
The document detailed a massive offshore wire transfer sent from Daniel Cross to Vernon Hale just three days ago.

But it was the memo line at the bottom of the page that made my entire world violently stop spinning.
It simply read: "For the continued medical care of Caroline and Emma Mercer."
