Chapter 5 - The Doctor's Prescription

Hale stepped slowly out of the thick ocean fog, holding a suppressed pistol with terrifyingly steady hands.

He was not dressed in his usual expensive tweed suit, but in a dark tactical jacket.

"Vernon," I said, stepping deliberately in front of Hannah to block the deadly laser sight.

"I trusted you with my life, and you stole my family."

Hale chuckled softly, the sound carrying a sickening, arrogant superiority over the crashing waves.

"Daniel needed total control of the shipping ports, and you were far too stubborn to negotiate," Hale explained calmly.

"Faking their deaths and blinding you was the most elegant medical solution to a very messy business problem."

"Where are they?" I demanded, my hand slowly creeping toward the heavy pistol holstered at my waist.

"They are perfectly safe in a private facility, completely unaware that you are still alive," Hale mocked.

He raised his weapon slightly, aiming it directly at my head.

"Daniel wants you dead, but I think a permanent, surgical blindness will suffice this time."

Hale reached into his tactical pocket and pulled out a massive syringe filled with a glowing green liquid.

"This dose will permanently sever your optic nerves in a matter of seconds," he promised.

I knew I could not draw my weapon faster than he could pull his sensitive trigger.

I needed a drastic distraction.

I subtly kicked a heavy, rusted metal chain off the wooden dock, sending it crashing violently into the dark water.

Hale flinched at the sudden noise, his pistol wavering for a fraction of a second.

I lunged forward with explosive speed, tackling the older man brutally onto the hard, wooden planks.

The suppressed pistol fired wildly into the night sky as we wrestled violently for control.

Hale was surprisingly strong, aggressively driving his knee into my stomach to break my dominant hold.

He raised the deadly green syringe, trying desperately to plunge the thick needle into my neck.

I grabbed his wrist with both hands, using every ounce of my remaining strength to hold the toxic poison back.

With a fierce, primal roar, I twisted his arm sharply until the bone snapped with a sickening crack.

Hale screamed in intense agony, dropping the syringe onto the wooden dock.

I immediately delivered a brutal right hook to his jaw, knocking him completely unconscious.

I stood up, breathing heavily, and looked back at Hannah and Lucy.

"Get in the boat," I ordered, grabbing the heavy ignition keys.

Before we could climb aboard, a massive explosion violently ripped through the main gates of my estate above us.

Daniel had officially bypassed the security systems and brought an entire army to hunt us down.
