Chapter 2 - The Blurry Truth

I kept my face completely passive, staring blankly into the empty darkness ahead of me.

"Daniel," I said smoothly.

"I did not expect you at the estate today."

Daniel’s heavy boots slowly crossed the room, stopping just inches from where Hannah was standing.

"I came to check on my favorite boss," Daniel replied, though his voice lacked its usual jovial respect.

"Your housekeeper looks a little pale, Grant."

I casually folded the damp handkerchief and slipped it back into my breast pocket.

"Hannah is easily startled by armed men entering my private library without knocking," I stated coldly.

"Dismissed, Hannah."

She practically ran from the room, her soft shoes making rapid, terrified sounds against the hardwood.

Daniel chuckled darkly, pouring himself a glass of my expensive bourbon.

As he drank, a strange, agonizing pressure began to build fiercely behind my eyes.

It felt like a thousand tiny needles were simultaneously piercing my optic nerves.

I gritted my teeth, gripping the arms of my leather chair to hide the sudden, violent tremor in my hands.

Then, something utterly impossible happened.

The pitch-black void in my vision suddenly fractured with a blinding, jagged flash of pure white light.

I gasped quietly, quickly turning my head toward the large bay windows to my right.

Through the agonizing pain, fuzzy, colorless shapes began to slowly materialize in my field of vision.

I could see the vague, blurry outline of the window frame standing against the bright morning sky.

I turned my gaze back toward the center of the room.

Daniel was standing near my desk, a large, dark silhouette holding a square glass tumbler.

My heart hammered violently against my ribs as I realized my sight was actually returning.

"Are you feeling alright, Grant?" Daniel asked, stepping closer to my chair.

"Just a headache," I lied, forcing my eyes to remain completely unfocused and vacant.

"You should get some rest," Daniel suggested, his blurry hand reaching slowly inside his tailored suit jacket.

I watched his hand wrap around the dark grip of his concealed weapon.

If he pulled that gun, I would have absolutely no choice but to fight him blindly.

Suddenly, a loud, panicked scream echoed violently from the second-floor hallway, shattering the tense silence.

It was Hannah’s daughter, little Lucy, screaming in absolute, unadulterated terror.
