Chapter 8 - The Sniper's Bluff

Daniel stared at Hannah in sheer, unadulterated disbelief.

"Your housekeeper came to fight a cartel war?" Daniel laughed loudly, echoing through the massive, empty warehouse.

"She is not just a housekeeper," I lied smoothly, projecting absolute, unwavering confidence.

"She is the best syndicate sniper on the East Coast, and she has three other shooters completely surrounding this building right now."

Daniel's heavily armed guards shifted nervously on the metal catwalks, scanning the dark, high windows for non-existent threats.

I needed to maintain this massive bluff just long enough to get Caroline safely out of his direct grip.

"Let her go, Daniel, and I will let you walk out of this city alive," I offered, taking a slow, deliberate step forward.

"You do not give the orders anymore, Grant!" Daniel shouted, pulling Caroline roughly back against his chest.

He pressed the cold, steel barrel of his pistol directly to her temple.

Caroline sobbed quietly, her wide, terrified eyes locking onto my face for the first time in five years.

"Grant," she whimpered softly, completely overwhelmed by the impossible reality of seeing me alive and standing before her.

"I have you, Caroline, I promise," I swore to her, my voice thick with fierce emotion.

I kept my pistol aimed squarely at Daniel's arrogant face.

"Shoot the girl on the catwalk, now!" Daniel suddenly roared to his hidden mercenaries.

Before his men could even pull their heavy triggers, Hannah squeezed the trigger of her stolen assault rifle.

She did not aim at the heavily armed men.

She aimed directly at the massive, ancient electrical transformer mounted high on the brick wall.

A deafening, fiery explosion shattered the transformer, plunging the entire warehouse into pitch-black, suffocating darkness.

Panicked shouts and wild, inaccurate gunfire instantly erupted from the frightened guards on the catwalks.

This was my absolute element.

I had spent five long years mastering how to move, fight, and kill in complete, total darkness.

I sprinted silently across the concrete floor, relying purely on the acute hearing I had developed during my blindness.

I heard Daniel cursing loudly as he dragged Caroline aggressively toward the rear loading dock doors.

I intercepted him flawlessly in the dark, sweeping his heavy legs out from under him with a brutal kick.

Daniel hit the hard ground violently, losing his tight grip on Caroline.

I grabbed her fragile arm and pulled her swiftly behind a heavy stack of wooden shipping crates.

"Stay completely down and do not make a sound," I whispered directly into her ear.

Suddenly, the massive emergency backup generators roared to life, flooding the warehouse with blinding, harsh white light.

Daniel was standing just ten feet away, pointing a heavy shotgun directly at my chest.

"It ends right now, Grant," Daniel screamed, pulling the heavy trigger without hesitation.
