Chapter 7 - The Overloaded Grid

I dropped the broken telephone cord onto the carpet, realizing with absolute horror that I had no federal backup coming whatsoever.
Director Hayes and Liam had brilliantly orchestrated this massive betrayal from the very top of the agency food chain.
I was completely and utterly alone against a highly trained cartel hit squad and two heavily armed, corrupt federal agents.
"Get under the heavy oak bed frame right now, Grandma," I ordered softly, helping Evelyn safely onto the floor.
Suddenly, the distinct, terrifying sound of heavy tactical boots crunching on the gravel driveway echoed loudly outside the house.
The cartel hitmen had officially arrived, and they were already aggressively setting up a heavy breaching charge on the front door.
I needed to create a massive, chaotic distraction to temporarily disable the electronic smart-locks keeping us trapped in the bedroom.
I frantically ripped the plastic cover off the digital smart-thermostat mounted securely on the drywall.
I used my pocket knife to expertly strip the delicate internal wires, exposing the raw copper connections to the open air.
"What exactly are you doing, you crazy woman?" my mother shrieked, cowering pathetically in the corner of the room.
"I am intentionally short-circuiting the entire smart-grid to violently blow the main breaker," I explained without looking completely away.
I forcefully crossed the highly charged wires, creating a massive, bright blue electrical spark that burned my fingertips.
A loud, violent popping sound echoed from the basement, and every single light in the entire house instantly went pitch black.
The heavy, motorized lock on the bedroom door loudly disengaged, defaulting to an open position due to the sudden power loss.
"Follow me closely and stay completely silent," I whispered to my family, drawing the heavy pistol from my waistband.
We slowly crept out of the dark bedroom and into the silent, pitch-black hallway leading toward the kitchen.
My ultimate goal was to safely reach the heavy steel storm cellar doors located secretly beneath the kitchen pantry.
Just as we reached the absolute edge of the kitchen, a massive, deafening explosion completely blew the front door off its hinges.
Three heavily armed cartel hitmen wearing dark tactical gear poured aggressively into the smoky, completely destroyed living room.
Before I could safely guide Evelyn down the hidden cellar stairs, my father suddenly panicked and completely lost his mind.

Richard violently grabbed Evelyn by the back of her fragile neck and forcefully shoved her directly out into the open hallway.
"Take the old woman, her secret accounts have enough money to completely pay off Sarah's massive debt!" my father screamed to the hitmen.
