Chapter 1 - The Stolen Signature

My mother stumbled backward in absolute shock as the shiny silver federal badge caught the dim porch light.

Her jaw dropped open and closed repeatedly like a fish suffocating on dry land.

I absolutely refused to wait for her to formulate a coherent, manipulative lie to explain the horrific screaming echoing from inside the house.

I aggressively pushed past her rigid, trembling body and sprinted desperately down the narrow hallway toward the back guest bedroom.

The two uniformed police officers followed closely behind my heels with their hands resting cautiously on their heavy utility belts.

My grandmother screamed my name one more time, her frail voice cracking with raw, unadulterated terror that shattered my heart.

I lifted my leg and kicked the heavy oak door open with enough massive force to completely splinter the wooden frame.

The horrifying sight waiting inside the dimly lit room made the blood freeze entirely in my rapidly pounding veins.

My father, Richard, was forcefully holding my fragile eighty-year-old grandmother down against the mattress by her trembling shoulders.

My supposedly perfect, successful sister Sarah was aggressively shoving a thick black ink pen directly into Evelyn's small, fragile hand.

A massive stack of highly complex legal documents rested heavily on a wooden clipboard right in front of Evelyn's tear-stained face.

"Drop the pen and step away from her right this exact second!" I shouted with absolute, undeniable federal authority.

Sarah jumped backward in sheer shock, dropping the expensive pen directly onto the floral bedsheet.

My father violently spun around, his face rapidly turning a dangerous shade of crimson when he finally noticed the armed police officers.

"This is merely a private family medical matter, officers," my father lied incredibly smoothly, attempting to sound completely calm and reasonable.

"It is severe elder abuse and massive financial coercion, which is a federal felony carrying twenty years in prison," I corrected him coldly.

I rushed immediately to the edge of the bed and gently wrapped my protective arms around my violently sobbing grandmother.

Evelyn leaned in close and whispered desperately into my ear that they had somehow discovered her secret offshore investment accounts.

She had quietly and brilliantly amassed a massive fortune over forty years, and my greedy family wanted to steal every single penny today.

I turned sharply to the two local officers and formally ordered them to place my father and sister under immediate arrest.

The taller police officer nodded respectfully, reached for his shiny metal handcuffs, and took a decisive step toward my father.

Suddenly, the police radio securely attached to the officer's broad shoulder buzzed with loud, frantic, and incredibly urgent static.

The local police captain's gruff voice barked a terrifying, undeniable command directly through the crackling electronic speaker.

"All units currently located at the Portland residence, you are ordered to stand down and evacuate the premises immediately."

The two officers looked at each other in utter confusion before slowly backing completely out of the tense bedroom.

"Wait, you absolutely cannot legally leave a federal agent in a hostile environment without backup," I demanded fiercely, flashing my badge again.

The taller officer shook his head apologetically and stated firmly that they had to strictly follow their direct chain of command.

They turned around in unison and literally ran entirely out of the front door, abandoning me completely to the wolves.

My father slowly closed the heavy bedroom door behind them and smoothly locked the solid brass deadbolt with a sickening click.

He reached into his tailored suit jacket and pulled out a sleek, heavily modified digital signal jamming device that pulsed with a red light.

"Your shiny little badge means absolutely nothing inside the walls of this house, Maya," my father sneered wickedly as he activated the powerful jammer.
