Chapter 4 - The Cartel's Shadow

My father immediately grabbed a roll of heavy silver duct tape from the bedside table and lunged aggressively toward me.

I did not spend fifteen years hunting dangerous criminals just to let an unemployed accountant easily overpower me in a guest bedroom.

I ducked swiftly under his clumsy, predictable grasp and drove my elbow forcefully into his soft ribs.

My father gasped loudly in sudden pain and stumbled backward, dropping the medical tablet completely onto the floor.

I kicked the tablet fiercely across the room, completely shattering the digital screen against the hard wooden baseboard.

Helen shrieked in absolute terror and scrambled desperately toward the door, frantically trying to unlock the brass deadbolt.

I lunged forward to completely secure my father, expertly sweeping his legs out from under him and pinning him to the carpet.

Before I could reach for the shiny metal handcuffs hooked to my belt, a terrifying, metallic click echoed loudly behind me.

I slowly turned my head and saw my sister, Sarah, pointing a loaded, black semi-automatic pistol directly at my face.

Her hands were shaking incredibly violently, but her finger was securely wrapped tightly around the sensitive trigger.

"Get off of him right this exact second, Maya," Sarah commanded, her voice pitching into a high, hysterical register.

I slowly raised my hands and carefully stepped away from my groaning father, keeping my eyes entirely locked on the shaking weapon.

"You do not want to add attempted murder of a federal agent to your list of massive charges, Sarah," I warned her calmly.

Sarah let out a bitter, humorless laugh that sounded dangerously close to a total mental breakdown.

"You literally have absolutely no idea what is actually at stake here today," she cried out, tears streaming down her flawless face.

She confessed that the beautiful house she bought at twenty-eight was secretly funded by massive, illegal underground loans.

She had idiotically borrowed a staggering amount of money from a highly violent drug cartel to sustain her fake, luxurious lifestyle.

"They are coming to completely skin me alive tonight if I do not pay them their two million dollars," Sarah sobbed uncontrollably.

Liam's voice suddenly crackled from the shattered, broken tablet resting in the corner of the room.

"And they are already on their way to your exact location, Maya, because I graciously provided them with your address," Liam taunted wickedly.

My heart plummeted deep into my stomach as I realized this entire operation was a meticulously crafted, deadly setup.

Liam was not just stealing the money; he was brilliantly using my family's massive debt to permanently eliminate me from the agency.
