Chapter 11 - The Poisoned Seed

The heavy black envelope felt like a block of solid ice in my trembling hands.

The joyous sounds of Maya’s birthday party echoed brightly from the lush gardens outside, a cruel contrast to the deafening silence suddenly roaring in my ears.

I stared at the photograph until the edges of my vision blurred.

Julian, the man who had just kissed my cheek and poured champagne for my friends, was shaking hands with the exact mercenary who had terrorized my daughters.

My mind raced back through every single interaction I had ever shared with Julian Rossi.

He had always been perfectly positioned to save me.

He had recommended the blind trust.

He had provided the escape jet.

He had supplied the heavily fortified Monaco penthouse.

It had all felt like a miraculous string of good luck, but the terrifying truth was now staring me directly in the face.

It was a meticulously crafted, invisible cage.

I heard Julian’s heavy, familiar footsteps walking slowly up the marble steps toward the kitchen.

I panicked, immediately shoving the photograph and the black envelope deep into the secret lining of my designer handbag resting on the counter.

I snatched a tray of freshly poured lemonade just as Julian walked through the arched doorway.

He smiled warmly at me, his dark eyes looking entirely loving and completely innocent.

He wrapped his strong arms around my waist from behind, resting his chin comfortably on my shoulder.

He asked me if I was feeling alright, noting that I looked slightly pale.

I forced a bright, entirely fake smile and leaned back into his embrace, suppressing the violent urge to push him away.

I told him I was just overwhelmed with gratitude for the beautiful life we had built together.

He kissed my neck gently and took the heavy tray from my hands, completely oblivious to the horrific discovery I had just made.

I watched him walk back out into the bright Italian sunshine.

If Julian had orchestrated Mark’s downfall from the very beginning, he was a sociopath of unparalleled proportions.

He had used my toxic marriage, my immense hidden wealth, and the safety of my children as disposable chess pieces in his own private war.

I knew I could not simply pack a bag and run.

Julian controlled the security detail, the private jets, and the banking networks we used daily.

If he suspected for a single second that I knew his secret, my daughters and I would disappear without a trace.

I waited until the party ended and the estate went completely quiet for the night.

I locked myself in the master bathroom, turned the shower on high to mask any sound, and pulled a prepaid burner phone from my emergency travel kit.

I dialed the one person in the world who currently despised Julian Rossi just as much as I did.

Patricia answered on the third ring, her voice raspy and exhausted from her grueling new shifts at a local diner in America.

I quickly explained the photograph and Chloe’s chilling message.

Patricia went entirely silent on the line, processing the terrifying magnitude of the betrayal.

She firmly promised to use her remaining social connections in the US to dig deep into Julian’s hidden past.
