Chapter 1 - The Illusion of Ownership

The smirk vanished from Mark's face the moment the heavy wooden door of the attorney's office closed securely behind me.

He truly thought he had just won everything by demanding the luxury penthouse and the expensive SUV.

He did not realize that neither of those massive assets were actually registered in his name.

During the early years of his construction business, when he was desperately drowning in corporate debt, I had quietly purchased the property through an anonymous blind trust.

I was the sole managing beneficiary of that entirely impenetrable legal trust.

He had just signed a legally binding divorce agreement willfully forfeiting any claim to assets not directly in his name.

By tomorrow morning, the building management would formally arrive to evict him and his new pregnant girlfriend from the premises.

I walked confidently out of the prestigious law firm and hailed a passing taxi to head straight to the international airport.

My two young daughters, Sophia and Maya, were already waiting for me at the terminal with my highly trusted executive assistant.

We were permanently leaving the country to start a brand new, peaceful life together in Florence, Italy.

I handed our three passports to the airline ticketing agent with a profound sense of overwhelming emotional relief.

The agent scanned my passport and suddenly frowned deeply at her glowing computer monitor.

She typed frantically on her keyboard for a few agonizing moments.

Then she looked up at me with a deeply apologetic and highly concerned expression on her face.

She told me that she could not legally issue our boarding passes under any circumstances today.

Someone had just placed a high-level federal red flag on my daughters' passports, claiming they were active victims of an international kidnapping.
