Chapter 6 - The Betrayal

Claire stared at the general, her mind racing to process the impossible betrayal.
Vance was her trusted mentor, the very man who had personally recruited her from the Academy into the black-ops division.
"You sold us out?" she choked out, tasting bitter copper blood in her mouth.
Vance slowly pulled back the hammer of his weapon.
"Luke’s final training mission uncovered a shipping manifest he was never supposed to see," Vance explained without emotion.
"The syndicate pays me very well to keep those lucrative shipping lanes quiet."
Claire's hand secretly slipped toward the micro-drive Vance had handed her earlier in the auditorium.
"Then why give me the warning in front of everyone?" she asked, desperately stalling for time.
"I needed you to isolate him from the crowd so my men could take him cleanly," Vance replied.
Claire’s fingers found the tiny, hidden trigger on the specialized micro-drive.
It wasn't just a secure data storage device.
She pressed the button, activating the high-frequency EMP blast concealed inside the casing.

Plunged into total darkness, Claire swept her leg out, knocking Vance off his feet before he could pull the trigger.
