Chapter 4 - The Escape Route

Claire shoved Luke hard toward the service kitchen double doors.

Bullets chipped the marble pillars around them as they sprinted through the chaotic, fleeing crowds.

They crashed into the stainless steel kitchen, sliding slightly on the slick, grease-stained floor.

"Who are these people?" Luke demanded, his military training finally kicking back into gear.

"They are a ghost syndicate, and they are here for you," Claire answered, barricading the door with a commercial oven.

Luke looked deeply offended, shaking his head in absolute disbelief.

"I'm a newly minted SEAL, why would an international syndicate target a rookie?" he argued.

Claire didn't have time to explain the massive geopolitical web he had unknowingly stumbled into.

She pointed to the narrow ventilation shaft near the ceiling of the pantry.

"Climb up there and don't make a single sound until I tell you it is clear," she ordered.

Luke grabbed her arm, his face flushed with anger and male pride.

"I am not hiding in a vent while my sister fights my battles," he growled.

Before Claire could argue, the kitchen barricade shuddered violently under a heavy impact.

The mercenaries were using a tactical battering ram.

The steel doors buckled inward, and a flashbang grenade rolled directly between Claire’s feet.
