Chapter 4 - The Leverage

The silence inside the dark pickup truck was utterly suffocating.
Claire stared at Daniel, struggling to reconcile the gentle phone repairman with the hardened driver sitting beside her.
“Who exactly are you, Daniel?” she demanded, demanding the truth for the first time.
Daniel let out a long, heavy sigh and restarted the engine, keeping the headlights off.
He carefully navigated out of the alleyway, ensuring the black SUV was truly gone.
“I’m just a guy trying to survive, Claire, but I have ghosts I haven't quite outrun yet.”
He drove her back to her towering apartment building and insisted she lock her doors immediately.
Claire barely slept that night, her mind racing with dangerous possibilities and unanswered questions.
The next morning, she marched straight into her father’s opulent executive suite without bothering to knock.
Richard was sitting behind his desk, sipping his morning espresso as if nothing had happened.
“You sent your thugs to run us off the road last night,” Claire accused, slamming her hands on his desk.
Richard slowly set his fine china cup down and looked at her with feigned disappointment.
“I merely sent my security team to ensure my naive daughter was safe with a known criminal.”
He opened his desk drawer and pulled out a second, much thicker manila folder.
“Daniel Brooks owes three million dollars to a highly aggressive underground gambling syndicate.”
Claire felt the air leave her lungs as Richard pushed the damning financial documents toward her.
“His older brother racked up the debt, died in a suspicious fire, and left Daniel holding the bag.”
Richard leaned forward, a victorious smirk playing on his lips.
“I bought his debt this morning, Claire, which means I now own the man you are so fascinated by.”
Claire stared at the official transfer papers, her stomach twisting into painful knots.
“If you ever see him again,” Richard whispered, “I will call in the debt and let the syndicate collect his life as payment.”
Claire realized with absolute horror that her father was not just controlling.
He was a monster willing to destroy an innocent man just to teach her an obedience lesson.
She backed away from the desk, turned around, and practically ran toward the executive elevators.
She had to warn Daniel before her father’s ruthless collectors showed up at his small shop.

As the elevator doors opened onto the lobby, two massive men in dark suits stepped forward, blocking her path entirely.
“Mr. Whitmore requested we escort you home, Miss,” the larger man stated, grabbing her arm tightly.
