Chapter 3 - The Drive

Claire stared at the glowing red threat on her computer screen, her heart hammering wildly against her ribs.
Her father’s corporate security team had clearly hacked her personal devices to monitor her communications.
Instead of feeling intimidated, a profound wave of protective fury washed over her.
She grabbed her coat, marched straight to the underground parking garage, and drove directly to Daniel’s shop.
Daniel looked genuinely surprised when she walked through the door an hour before closing time.
“I know this is sudden, but can we get that coffee right now?” Claire asked breathlessly.
He studied her tense expression for a moment before silently flipping the sign on the door to closed.
They walked to a quiet little diner a few blocks away, surrounded by the comforting smell of roasted beans.
For two hours, Claire forgot about the suffocating pressure of her massive inheritance and her father’s controlling grip.
Daniel was remarkably easy to talk to, sharing funny stories about his childhood in the city.
He never once asked about her wealth, her family connections, or her corporate title.
He just looked at her as if she were a normal, interesting human being.
When the evening finally wound down, Daniel offered to drive her back to her luxury apartment.
They climbed into his rusted, ten-year-old pickup truck, the engine roaring to life with a loud rumble.
As they merged onto the dark highway, Claire noticed a sleek black SUV tailing them far too closely.
“Daniel, I think that car is following us,” she whispered, panic creeping back into her voice.
Daniel glanced in the rearview mirror, and his relaxed demeanor vanished instantly.
His jaw tightened, and his hands gripped the steering wheel with practiced, terrifying precision.
“Hold on tight,” he commanded in a voice she had never heard him use before.
He suddenly slammed on the brakes, forcing the aggressive SUV to swerve violently to avoid a collision.
Daniel then whipped the steering wheel hard, spinning the heavy truck into a narrow, unlit industrial alleyway.
He turned off the headlights, plunging them into complete darkness as the SUV roared past their hiding spot.
Claire was trembling, completely shocked by his incredible evasive driving skills.
“Where did you learn how to do that?” she asked, her voice barely a whisper in the dark cab.
May you like
Daniel slowly turned his head to look at her, his blue-gray eyes completely devoid of warmth.
“Your father isn’t the only dangerous man in Chicago, Claire.”
