Chapter 2 - The Corporate Noose

Claire sat perfectly still at her massive mahogany desk, staring out over the sprawling Chicago skyline.

The anonymous flash of the camera from the previous evening had left her feeling deeply uneasy.

Her office phone buzzed loudly, shattering the tense silence of the room.

Her assistant informed her that her father was waiting in the executive boardroom and demanded her presence immediately.

Claire smoothed her skirt, took a deep breath, and walked down the long, glass-paneled hallway.

Richard Whitmore did not bother looking up from his tablet when she finally entered the room.

“Your personal credit line has been temporarily suspended,” Richard announced in a cold, matter-of-fact tone.

Claire stopped dead in her tracks.

“You have no right to freeze my personal accounts,” she fired back, her voice shaking with suppressed anger.

Richard finally raised his eyes, and they were as hard and unforgiving as polished granite.

“I have every right to protect the assets of this company when my Senior Vice President starts acting erratically.”

He tossed a thick manila folder onto the center of the massive boardroom table.

Claire cautiously opened the file and felt the blood completely drain from her face.

It contained dozens of surveillance photographs of her walking into Daniel’s modest repair shop.

“You are a Whitmore, and we do not associate with blue-collar trash for amusement,” Richard warned.

Claire closed the folder, a fierce, unfamiliar sense of rebellion rising in her chest.

“I needed my phone fixed, and he fixed it,” she replied sharply.

“If you ever send your private investigators to follow me again, I will personally resign from the board.”

Richard offered a hollow, mocking laugh.

“You wouldn’t last a single week in the real world without my money, Claire.”

She turned on her heel and stormed out of the boardroom without saying another word.

As she reached her office, her newly repaired phone buzzed with an incoming text message from an unknown number.

It was Daniel, asking if she wanted to grab a simple cup of coffee that weekend.

Claire smiled genuinely, typing out a quick and enthusiastic agreement.

But just as she hit send, her computer screen flickered and went entirely black.

A glowing line of red text slowly typed itself across her dark monitor.

“Cancel the date, or we will ruin him.”
