Chapter 8 - The Viper’s Nest

I froze inside the vault doorway, clutching the cold glass vial against my ribs.

Adrian slowly turned around, his weapon still aimed at the floor where his unconscious brother lay bleeding.

"Victor?" Adrian said, his voice dropping into an icy register.

"Where are the men I sent with you to hold the stairwell?"

Victor tilted his head slightly, offering an apologetic shrug.

"They had an unfortunate accident with three fragmentation grenades on the third floor, Adrian."

The pieces of the nightmare slammed together in my mind with sickening clarity.

The leaked location.

The compromised security cameras.

The sniper who knew exactly which window belonged to Ethan’s room.

"It wasn't Julian who sold us out," I whispered, my voice trembling with sheer horror.

"Julian was just the loud distraction."

"Give the lady a prize," Victor chuckled, raising his weapon until the black barrel was pointed directly at Adrian’s forehead.

"Julian is an arrogant idiot who thought he was going to be the new Don."

"He was so busy dreaming of power that he didn't realize Moretti and I had made our deal six months ago."

"I gave you twenty years of loyalty, Victor," Adrian said, his posture completely motionless, not a single muscle betraying fear.

"I made you the second most powerful man on the West Coast."

"You made me a shadow!" Victor snarled, his mask of calm composure instantly shattering into raw, venomous rage.

"Every room I walked into, people asked where Adrian Blackwood was!"

"Every politician, every banker, every judge—they only wanted to deal with you!"

"And then you started talking about going legitimate!"

"You wanted to clean the money and build children’s hospitals because this woman ran away with your conscience!"

Victor gestured with his gun toward Ethan, who was lying motionless behind the cast-iron boiler.

"That boy represents the end of the Blackwood empire," Victor said coldly.

"If he lives, you retire."

"If he dies, you burn the city down until you get yourself killed by the authorities."

"Either way, I inherit the entire syndicate without firing a single shot at you."

"Hand over the vial, Clara."

"Or I put a hollow-point bullet through Adrian's brain right now."

I looked at Adrian.

His eyes were completely locked on mine, conveying a silent, desperate message: Save our son.

I took two slow steps forward, holding the blue glass vial out in my right hand.

"Don't shoot him," I pleaded, letting my knees shake to look completely broken.

"Take the vial."

"Just let me hold my baby while he passes."

Victor smiled with sickening triumph, extending his left hand to take the cure.

As his fingers grazed the cold glass, I did not drop the vial into his palm.

I crushed the heavy industrial surgical clamp I had hidden in my left sleeve directly into his throat.
