Chapter 1 - The Shadow in the Corridor

The heavy steel fire doors rattled on their hinges as eight armed men in charcoal suits fanned out across the pediatric intensive care unit.

Hospital staff pressed themselves against the plaster walls, terrified into absolute silence.

At the center of the formation stood Adrian Blackwood.

He wore a tailored black coat that smelled of cold rain and expensive tobacco.

His slate-gray eyes cut through the sterile glare of the corridor, locking instantly onto mine.

Seven years had passed since I slipped out of his penthouse in the dead of night with nothing but a duffel bag and a positive pregnancy test.

Seven years of hiding behind fake names, dyed hair, and minimum-wage retail counters in strip malls.

Now, he was standing six feet away from me.

He did not look like a memory.

He looked like an executioner who had finally tracked down a runaway.

"Clara," Adrian said, his voice deep and vibrating with restrained fury.

My voice caught in my throat as I backed up against the reinforced glass of Trauma Room Three.

Behind that glass, my seven-year-old son was bleeding out on a gurney.

"Stay away from him, Adrian," I whispered, my fingernails digging into my palms until they bled.

Adrian did not look at the security guards or the trembling nurses.

He stepped forward until I could feel the radiant heat coming off his chest.

"You told me you lost the child," Adrian murmured, his jaw tightening so hard a muscle twitched beneath his skin.

"You swore on your mother's grave that you had a miscarriage before you vanished from Chicago."

"I had to protect him from you," I choked out, tears finally spilling over my eyelashes.

"Look at yourself, Adrian."

"You brought automatic rifles into a children's trauma ward."

Adrian's eyes flickered toward the glass window.

He saw the small, pale boy hooked to three separate IV pumps, his tiny chest rising and falling in shallow, desperate gasps.

Something fractured inside the mob boss’s impenetrable mask.

"He carries my blood," Adrian said, his voice dropping into a dangerous whisper.

"The national registry alerted my private security team thirty seconds after his blood sample entered the centrifuge."

"He has Rh-null blood with the Blackwood genetic antigen."

"There are only four people on this continent who can give him a direct transfusion without triggering a fatal hemolytic reaction."

Adrian turned sharply toward the trembling hematologist.

"Prep the transfer line right now," Adrian commanded, stripping off his heavy coat and rolling up the left sleeve of his dress shirt.

"Take every drop of blood the boy needs."

The hematologist adjusted his spectacles with shaking fingers, holding a digital tablet.

"Mr. Blackwood... the blood match isn't the primary problem," the doctor stammered.

Adrian froze, his eyes narrowing into slits.

"Explain," Adrian ordered.

"Your son did not collapse from a genetic blood disorder," the doctor said, holding up a toxicology report marked with crimson warning stripes.

"Someone injected him with a concentrated synthetic coagulant blocker."

"Ethan was deliberately poisoned on that playground three hours ago."
