Chapter 10 - Dawn of the Blackwoods

Adrian pressed down again with all the strength left in his bleeding body.

"Ethan!" he shouted, tears streaming freely down his soot-stained face.

Suddenly, a violent, ragged gasp ripped through the small boy's throat.

Ethan’s back arched off the floor as his lungs expanded with a desperate surge of air.

The cardiac monitor sputtered, crackled, and then picked up a sharp, rhythmic beep.

Sixty.

Seventy-five.

Eighty-eight.

The green line on the display organized itself into a steady, beautiful, perfect rhythm.

Ethan’s eyelids fluttered, batting away the heavy sedation.

The blue tint around his lips faded, replaced by the soft, warm pink of returning circulation.

His small brown eyes opened slowly, blinking against the harsh halogen glare of the basement.

"Mom?" Ethan whispered, his voice tiny and hoarse.

"I'm here, my angel," I sobbed, pulling his small head into my lap and kissing his forehead over and over again.

"You're safe."

"You're going to be okay."

Ethan moved his eyes slightly, looking at the towering, blood-spattered man kneeling beside him on the concrete floor.

Adrian sat frozen, looking at his son with an expression of profound, reverent wonder.

"Are you... the man from Mom's photograph?" Ethan asked weakly, reaching out one tiny, bruised hand.

Adrian choked back a sob, gently capturing Ethan’s small hand within his massive, trembling palm.

"I'm your father, Ethan," Adrian whispered, his voice thick with emotions he had never allowed himself to feel in thirty-five years of life.

"And I will never let anyone hurt you again."

Three months later, the morning sun rose warm and golden over a private coastal estate in Monterey.

The waves crashed gently against the jagged rocks below the cliffside garden.

The Blackwood crime syndicate was officially dead.

Adrian had dismantled every illegal arm of his empire, handing over encrypted records of the Moretti cartel to federal prosecutors, who had dismantled the entire network within forty-eight hours.

The vast Blackwood fortune had been transferred entirely into legitimate medical research foundations and pediatric trust funds.

I stood on the sunlit back terrace, drinking a cup of warm tea, watching Adrian run across the green grass with Ethan on his shoulders, both of them laughing loudly into the salty morning breeze.

For the first time in seven years, my chest did not feel tight with fear.

We were safe, we were whole, and we were finally a family.

I turned back inside to unpack the last remaining box from our old Pasadena life, pulling out Ethan’s favorite denim jacket from his school locker.

As I shook the fabric out, my fingers brushed against a thick, unnatural seam sewn into the inner collar.

I grabbed a pair of scissors and sliced through the black thread, expecting a piece of cardboard reinforcement.

Instead, a tiny silver microchip slipped out into my palm, stamped with a crimson double-eagle crest that did not belong to the Blackwood family or the Moretti cartel.

Taped beneath the chip was a single typed sentence that froze the breath in my throat:

The sample matches the protocol; prepare to activate the second twin.
