Chapter 3 - Siege in the Dark

"Sniper!" Victor shouted, throwing his body against the heavy linen cart to create cover.

A suppressed rifle crack shattered the reinforced glass into a web of silver fractures.

A second high-caliber round tore through the outer pane, embedding itself deep into the plaster just three inches above Ethan's head.

Adrian did not flinch.

He did not duck for cover.

He threw his own massive body across Ethan’s bed, shielding our child with his chest and back while the transfusion needle remained anchored in his arm.

"Clara, get under the console!" Adrian roared over the sound of breaking glass.

I dove behind the heavy steel crash cart, my eyes fixed on the plastic tubing connecting father and son.

Blood was still flowing through the line, pumping life from Adrian into Ethan's fading body.

Glass rain rained down around us as Blackwood’s soldiers returned fire through the shattered window with suppressed submachine guns.

"They're on the parking garage roof across the street!" one of the guards yelled, firing in controlled three-round bursts.

"They aren't trying to assassinate you, boss!"

"They're aiming for the power lines and the medical equipment!"

"They want the boy dead before the transfusion finishes!"

Adrian turned his head toward me in the red-tinted gloom.

His face was streaked with sweat, and his breathing had grown heavy from the rapid blood draw.

"Clara, reach into my inner jacket pocket," Adrian ordered between clenched teeth.

"Do it now."

I crawled across the glass-strewn floor, ignoring the sharp shards cutting into my knees.

I reached into the silk lining of his tailored coat and pulled out a heavy titanium thumb drive wrapped in black electrical tape.

"What is this?" I asked, trembling.

"The antidote synthesis formula for Viper-Nine," Adrian said, locking his gray eyes onto mine.

My breath hitched in my chest.

"You had the formula this whole time?"

"My research lab in Zurich developed a universal inhibitor two months ago when Moretti started testing the chemical," Adrian explained, his voice tight with agony as the needle pulled another unit from his veins.

"The raw chemical compounds are stocked in the hospital’s advanced oncology vault on the lower basement level."

"Why didn't you tell the doctors immediately?" I cried.

"Because the vault requires two biometric keys to open," Victor interrupted from behind the steel cart, reloading his sidearm.

"The chief of surgery holds one key."

"And the second key belongs to the hospital director, who was found dead in his office twenty minutes ago."
