Chapter 9 - The Stairwell Justice

Thomas held his fist trembling in the air, mere inches from the administrator's terrified face.

The corrupt man sobbed uncontrollably, confessing that Richard had promised to erase his massive gambling debts in exchange for the lethal injection.

He cried that the cartel was going to kill his own family if he didn't deliver the dead child to secure the insurance money.

Thomas wanted nothing more than to beat the life out of the man who had just poisoned his daughter.

Suddenly, a firm hand clamped down hard on Thomas's shoulder.

Officer Miller had arrived on the landing, his weapon holstered but his expression deadly serious.

The officer gently pulled Thomas back, reminding him that Lily needed her father alive and out of prison.

Thomas slowly lowered his fist, stepping away with a disgusted sneer as Officer Miller slapped handcuffs on the weeping administrator.

Without wasting another second, Thomas turned around and sprinted back up the concrete stairs toward the pediatric ICU.

He burst through the heavy double doors just as a long, continuous flatline tone pierced the air.

The heart monitor displayed a completely flat, glowing green line.

Dr. Jenkins was straddling the stretcher, performing aggressive chest compressions with tears streaming down her face.

The medical team was scrambling frantically, pushing endless doses of epinephrine into the child's tiny veins.

Thomas collapsed against the doorframe, his entire world shattering into a million irreparable pieces.

Dr. Jenkins finally stopped the compressions, looked up at the wall clock, and shook her head slowly.

She stepped back from the bed, preparing to call the official time of death.
