Chapter 4 - The Silent Witness

Thomas paced relentlessly outside the emergency room entrance, desperately searching for a way back inside.
He spotted Officer Miller, the only cop who had shown a fraction of doubt about Evelyn's story, walking toward his patrol car.
Thomas intercepted the officer and begged him to run a background check on Richard's private life.
He explained that Evelyn had always been manipulative, but she had never possessed the legal knowledge to orchestrate this kind of elaborate fraud.
Officer Miller hesitated, risking his own badge, before finally agreeing to quietly look into the prosecutor's files.
Upstairs, the private medical transport team arrived with a specialized stretcher.
Dr. Jenkins secretly handed her evidence vial to a trusted nurse and ordered it sent directly to the independent state lab.
Richard supervised the transport team as they began unhooking Lily from the hospital's monitoring equipment.
The hospital administrator, a nervous man in a cheap suit, arrived and caved instantly to Richard's political pressure.
He ordered Dr. Jenkins to stand down and allow the legal guardians to take possession of the child.
Dr. Jenkins loudly protested that the transfer ambulance lacked the necessary life-support equipment for a pediatric surgical patient.
Richard completely ignored her warnings and signaled for the paramedics to roll the stretcher toward the elevators.
Thomas had managed to sneak back into the building through the loading dock and sprinted up the emergency stairwell.
He burst through the fire doors just as the stretcher was rolling past the nurses' station.
Thomas threw his body in front of the heavy medical cart, physically blocking the hallway.
He screamed at Evelyn, demanding to know why she was risking their daughter's life just to spite him.
Richard signaled to his tactical team, who immediately drew their batons and surrounded the desperate father.
Richard leaned in close to Thomas, a wicked and terrifying smile spreading across his face.
He whispered that if Thomas did not move, the battery on Lily's portable life support machine might experience a tragic, fatal malfunction during transit.
Thomas's blood ran cold as he realized Richard was openly confessing his plan to murder the child.
Evelyn stood by silently, proving that she was completely complicit in the horrifying scheme.
Thomas looked down at his beautiful, fragile daughter sleeping on the stretcher.
He knew that fighting the armed officers would get him arrested again, leaving Lily completely defenseless.
Instead of moving, Thomas grabbed the heavy steel frame of the stretcher with an unbreakable grip.
May you like
He yelled at the top of his lungs, demanding that someone call the federal authorities.
Richard's face twisted into a mask of pure rage as he gave the tactical team the order to strike.
