Chapter 2 - The Dispatcher's Secret

The chilling audio recording hung in the air of the hospital corridor like a heavy fog.
Thomas stared at his ex-wife with a mixture of absolute horror and profound betrayal.
He finally realized that Evelyn had intentionally tried to frame him for the attempted murder of their only child.
Evelyn's face drained of all color as the police officers slowly turned their attention toward her.
The lead officer reached for his own handcuffs and informed Evelyn that she was under investigation for filing a false police report.
Dr. Jenkins crossed her arms, disgusted by a mother who would manipulate a dying child to win a custody battle.
Instead of panicking, Evelyn let out a cold, calculating laugh that sent shivers down Thomas's spine.
She confidently reached into her expensive designer purse and pulled out a folded legal document.
She slapped the paper onto the hospital reception desk and ordered the police to read it carefully.
The officer reviewed the document and his stern expression quickly morphed into one of complete confusion.
It was an emergency judicial order signed by a superior court judge just three hours ago.
The document completely revoked all of Thomas's parental rights and granted Evelyn immediate, sole physical custody of Lily.
Evelyn smiled wickedly and claimed that Thomas dropping off the groceries violated a temporary restraining order he didn't even know existed.
She proudly announced that she was legally authorized to move Lily completely out of the state the moment the child was discharged.
Thomas frantically pulled against his cuffs, screaming that the document had to be a forgery.
The police officer shook his head apologetically and stated that the judge's signature was completely authentic.
Dr. Jenkins stepped forward, using her intimidating military presence to block Evelyn from walking toward the recovery room.
Evelyn sneered and threatened to have the hospital sued if she was not allowed to see her property.
She referred to her own daughter as property, confirming every dark suspicion the surgeon had.
The officer informed Thomas that until a family court reversed the order, he was legally barred from coming within five hundred feet of Lily.
Thomas fell to his knees on the linoleum floor, weeping openly as the police began to escort him toward the exit.
Evelyn picked up her crushed coffee cup and tossed it into the trash with a triumphant smirk.
She turned to Dr. Jenkins and demanded that Lily be prepped for an immediate medical transport to another hospital.
Dr. Jenkins firmly denied the request, stating that moving a child fresh out of abdominal surgery was a fatal risk.
Evelyn pulled out her cell phone and dialed a number with lightning speed.
She spoke into the receiver, loudly complaining that a rogue doctor was holding her child hostage against a court order.
Thomas fought against the officers dragging him away, his eyes locked on the double doors of the intensive care unit.
He swore to Evelyn that he would spend every last breath fighting to get his little girl back.

Evelyn simply waved goodbye to him and ended her phone call with a terrifying promise.
She looked directly at Dr. Jenkins and announced that her new fiancé was on his way to clear out the hospital.
