Chapter 10 - The False Victory

The intense, overwhelming relief washing over me was powerful enough to bring heavy tears to my tired eyes.

The horrific, life-threatening nightmare that had started at a simple pool party was completely over.

Brooke was currently being processed, destined to spend the rest of her miserable life rotting inside a federal prison.

The lethal explosive harness was sitting safely inside a heavily guarded FBI bomb disposal unit.

Maisie was quietly eating a complimentary sandwich, looking completely calm and entirely unharmed by the trauma.

The sterile walls of the federal safe house felt like the impenetrable fortress we so desperately needed.

I walked across the quiet room and pulled my sweet granddaughter into a deep, profoundly loving embrace.

I kissed the top of her head, silently thanking God for delivering us entirely out of the darkness.

"We are going to start completely over, Adam," I promised, looking softly at my wounded son sitting by the table.

"We will pack up, go somewhere safe, just the three of us, and completely forget this tragedy ever happened."

Adam slowly looked up from his blood-stained hands, but his expression was completely devoid of any comfort.

Instead of overwhelming relief, a strange, calculating coldness seemed to settle deeply into his dark eyes.

Maisie gently pushed away from my loving embrace and looked directly up into my weathered face.

Her small, innocent voice had completely changed into something impossibly calm and chillingly mature.

"Mommy told me you would bring me exactly where they needed me to go, Grandma," Maisie whispered smoothly.

I froze entirely, a deep, paralyzing confusion violently gripping my exhausted, terrified mind.

I slowly turned around to look at Special Agent Vance standing quietly by the heavy steel door.

Vance reached out, aggressively locked the heavy deadbolt, and calmly removed his silver federal badge.

Adam did not look shocked, horrified, or even slightly concerned by the trusted agent's terrifying action.

Adam simply smiled, letting the clean white medical towel drop casually onto the floor.

"Thanks for the perfect delivery, Mom," Adam said with a sickeningly cheerful, unapologetic voice.

"We could never get this billion-dollar biological asset past the international border without a clean, verified guardian's signature on federal record."

Vance pulled a suppressed tactical pistol from his jacket and aimed it directly at my chest.
