Chapter 1 - The Secret

Maisie’s small, trembling hands finally managed to pull the zipper all the way down the back of her cotton dress.

The floral fabric slipped off her tiny shoulders and pooled completely around her waist.

I had expected to see a rash, an accidental bruise, or perhaps an injury she was simply too afraid to show her mother.

I never could have expected to see a heavy, black canvas harness strapped aggressively across her pale chest.

It looked exactly like a piece of tactical military equipment that had been custom altered to fit a four-year-old child.

Thick nylon straps wrapped tightly around her small ribcage, biting deeply into her soft skin.

Dark purple and yellow bruises bloomed violently around the raw edges of the abrasive straps.

Someone had secured this horrific device onto her with absolute, ruthless force.

Right in the center of her chest, locked to the harness with heavy steel zip-ties, was a thick plastic box.

A single, menacing red light blinked steadily on the front of the black device.

My breath completely left my lungs.

My hands began to shake uncontrollably as I stared at the flashing red light.

"Maisie, what on earth is this," I whispered, terrified that speaking too loudly might trigger something terrible.

Maisie flinched violently and pressed her small back firmly against the cold bathroom door.

"Don't touch it, Grandma," she pleaded with hot tears streaming down her terrified face.

"Daddy said if anyone touches the box, it will make the bad fire happen again."

My mind reeled violently at the horrifying implication of her words.

My own son, the boy I had raised with endless love and gentleness, had strapped a shock device to his own daughter.

The dark reality of the situation crashed over me like a suffocating, icy wave.

I immediately remembered the printed swim lesson receipt sitting casually on the kitchen counter outside.

It was nothing but a carefully constructed alibi.

Brooke had purposely left it there to prove to the guests that they treated Maisie like a normal, happy child.

They knew she could not put on a swimsuit without exposing this monstrous harness to the entire family.

They were intentionally parading her around the pool party to establish their flawless family image.

I reached for a clean towel to wrap around her freezing, bruised shoulders.

Just as my fingers brushed the soft fabric, the brass doorknob rattled aggressively.

"Helen, what is taking so long in there," Brooke’s voice demanded angrily from the hallway.

Her tone was completely stripped of the sweet, polished charm she had been projecting all afternoon.

It was a cold, calculating, and deeply menacing voice.

"Maisie just needed some help with her zipper, Brooke," I lied, forcing my tone to remain calm and steady.

"We will be out in just a minute."

May you like

"No, you will come out right now," Brooke snapped back with venom in her voice.

I heard the heavy, unmistakable sound of a metal key sliding into the bathroom door lock from the outside.
