Chapter 5 - The Secret Tunnels
The heavy steel door groaned quietly as Graham forcefully pushed it open into the freezing darkness.
It was an old, forgotten prohibition era smuggler's tunnel that connected directly to the mansion’s massive underground wine cellar.
Graham had completely hidden this specific architectural secret from everyone, including his most trusted advisor.
They walked silently through the damp, narrow passageway, desperately trying to catch their breath.
Claire carefully checked her coat pocket to ensure Natalie’s precious digital voice recorder had survived the violent crash.
The small electronic device was completely intact, holding the absolute key to completely destroying Everett’s lies.
They finally reached the dusty wooden door leading directly into the sprawling, temperature controlled wine cellar.
Graham slowly opened the door, his heavy pistol raised and completely ready for a violent confrontation.
The massive basement was entirely silent, completely devoid of the usual bustling household staff.
They crept quietly up the servant stairs, desperately hoping to find an unguarded path to the main library.
They found the loyal captain of the mansion guard lying completely unconscious near the kitchen pantry, heavily bleeding from a severe head wound.
Everett had clearly used his trusted position to quietly poison or entirely neutralize the loyal security team from the inside.
Graham carefully checked the captain's pulse, breathing a quiet sigh of relief when he found a steady, strong heartbeat.
Claire slowly stepped out of the kitchen, carefully scanning the dimly lit grand hallway for any roaming mercenaries.
She accidentally stepped perfectly onto a loose hardwood floorboard that let out a sharp, terrifying creak.

A heavily armed mercenary instantly stepped out from the shadows of the formal dining room, completely raising his assault rifle.
He aimed the deadly weapon directly at Claire’s chest and confidently placed his finger perfectly on the trigger.
