Chapter 4 - The Shattered Trust

Damiano stared at his heavy gold syndicate ring, completely horrified by the terrifying accusation.
He desperately tried to step forward to calm her down, but Serena aggressively grabbed a broken wine bottle from the floor.
She held the jagged green glass dangerously close to his chest, absolutely refusing to let him come any closer to her daughter.
Lucia cried loudly, tightly clutching her one-eared rabbit and begging her mother to stop yelling at the scary man.
Damiano slowly raised both of his empty hands in the air, speaking in the most gentle, calming voice he could possibly manage.
He carefully explained that Marco had stolen this exact ring from his desk four years ago on the exact night of the tragic fire.
He completely swore on his own life that he would rather die a thousand agonizing deaths than ever bring harm to her.
Serena’s trembling hands slowly began to lower as a massive flood of highly painful, suppressed memories suddenly crashed into her brain.
She painfully remembered the beautiful, passionate summer they had spent secretly together before the horrific violence tore them apart.
She dropped the broken glass and collapsed onto the cold stone floor, completely sobbing as she finally remembered his true name.
Damiano gently pulled her into his broad chest, holding her incredibly tight as she wept into his expensive shirt.
He looked down at the beautiful little girl standing bravely beside them with her battered stuffed animal.
Lucia glared at him intensely, wiping her tears and strictly demanding that he apologize for making her mother cry again.
Damiano smiled a deeply genuine, emotional smile for the first time in four miserable years.
He looked directly into Serena’s beautiful eyes and softly asked the heavy question that was violently tearing his soul apart.
He desperately asked if the fierce, stubborn three-year-old girl in front of him was actually his own flesh and blood.
Serena slowly nodded her head, completely confirming the beautiful, terrifying truth that would change his life forever.
Before Damiano could even process the massive revelation of his fatherhood, the heavy cellar door slammed violently shut from the outside.

A thick, highly toxic green gas began rapidly pouring into the small, locked room through the overhead ventilation shafts.
Marco had completely regained consciousness, and he was currently fully executing his backup plan to bury them all alive.
