Chapter 2 - The Whispers in the Dark

Damiano stared at the bloody monitor, his dark eyes blazing with a lethal, uncontrollable fury.
Nobody dared to attack a member of the Conti syndicate directly on his own heavily fortified property.
He immediately pressed the emergency lockdown button, sealing the entire estate behind massive steel shutters.
Marco pretended to be absolutely furious, drawing his own weapon and loudly demanding to hunt down the killers.
Damiano completely ignored his friend’s theatrical display and sprinted out of the office toward the servants’ quarters.
His only thought was entirely focused on protecting Serena and the little girl with the fierce attitude.
He burst through the heavy wooden door of Serena’s small bedroom, fully expecting to find them terrified.
Instead, he found the room completely empty.
The small closet was entirely stripped of their meager belongings, and a single window was left wide open to the cold night air.
Damiano felt a massive, suffocating wave of panic crash over his chest as he approached the bed.
He found a small, crumpled piece of paper resting perfectly on Serena’s neatly folded uniform.
The handwritten note stated that she was incredibly sorry, but a dangerous man had just warned her to leave immediately.
Damiano roared in pure anger, completely tearing the room apart in a desperate search for clues.
He noticed a tiny blinking red light perfectly hidden inside the ventilation grate above the small dresser.
He forcefully ripped the metal grate off the wall, revealing a highly sophisticated, military-grade surveillance camera.
Damiano slowly examined the expensive equipment, his blood running completely cold.
This specific type of camera was only ever purchased and used by Marco’s elite internal security team.

Damiano finally realized that the greatest threat to his newly discovered family was standing right inside his own house.
He turned around slowly to find Marco leaning casually against the bedroom doorframe with a silenced pistol pointed directly at Damiano's heart.
