Chapter 9 - The Last Breath

My blood ran completely cold as Marcus held his gun to Lila’s head.
“Let her go, Marcus,” I begged, slowly lowering the adrenaline needle.
“I will give you whatever you want.”
Marcus sneered, tightening his grip on Lila’s small, fragile shoulder.
“Toss the rabbit over here, Clara,” he demanded harshly.
I reached for the cloth toy sitting on the nearby surgical tray, my hands shaking violently.
I knew that if I gave him the codes, he would kill us all anyway.
Lila looked at me, her dark eyes filled with terror, but she suddenly did something unexpected.
She signed the word for “duck” using her free hand.
I threw myself to the floor just as a massive shadow rose from the operating table behind me.
Damian, fueled by pure willpower and lingering adrenaline in his system, lunged at Marcus.
His heart may have been stopped, but the mafia boss refused to die before protecting us.
Damian tackled Marcus, knocking the gun out of his hand and sending it sliding across the floor.
Lila scrambled away, running straight into my open arms.
The two men fought brutally on the bloody tiles, throwing heavy punches in the red emergency light.
Marcus managed to pull a hidden knife from his boot, driving it toward Damian’s ribs.
Damian caught his wrist, twisting it until the bone snapped loudly.
Marcus screamed, dropping the blade.
I scrambled across the floor, grabbed the discarded gun, and aimed it directly at my former husband.
“Step away from him, Marcus!” I yelled, my finger trembling on the trigger.
Marcus laughed, spitting blood onto the white tiles.
“You do not have the guts to shoot me, Clara,” he taunted, stepping toward me.
I looked at my daughter, remembered the hell he had put us through, and pulled the trigger without hesitation.
The bullet struck Marcus squarely in the chest, dropping him instantly to the cold floor.

Damian collapsed beside him, his face turning a terrifying shade of blue as his brain ran out of oxygen.
I dropped the gun, grabbed the adrenaline needle, and plunged it directly into Damian’s chest.
