Chapter 2 - The Poisoned Truth

The sterile smell of spilled medicine filled the air as Doctor Aris pointed his gun at us.
Damian did not hesitate for even a fraction of a second.
He fired his pistol, shattering the doctor’s shoulder and sending the man crashing to the floor.
The remote control skittered across the marble tiles.
I lunged forward and grabbed the device before the doctor could reach it.
“Do not press anything, Clara,” Damian warned as he climbed out of bed with agonizing slowness.
His face was completely drained of color, but his eyes burned with lethal determination.
“The remote controls the detonation timer, but it also controls the poison leaking into my bloodstream.”
Lila clung to my leg, completely oblivious to the deafening gunshot but sensing the terrifying vibrations of violence.
I held the small plastic device tightly, noticing a digital timer counting down from sixty minutes.
“We have one hour before your heart stops,” I said, my voice trembling with fear.
Damian grabbed a heavy winter coat from his closet and holstered his weapon.
“We need to get to the underground garage before his men breach the room.”
He pressed a hidden button behind a large oil painting, revealing a dark escape tunnel in the wall.
I picked up Lila and followed the dying mafia boss into the damp darkness.
We navigated the narrow passageway until we reached the reinforced steel door of the garage.
Damian pushed it open, revealing a fleet of luxury cars.
Before we could take another step, the shadows shifted.
Victor, the head of Damian’s security, stepped into the light with a submachine gun raised.
“You are making a mistake by leaving, Boss,” Victor said with a cold, hollow expression.
Damian gripped his chest in pain, staring down his most trusted friend.
“How much did they pay you to betray me, Victor?” Damian asked bitterly.
Victor shook his head and pulled the charging handle of his weapon back.
“They did not pay me with money, Damian.”

He aimed the barrel directly at my daughter’s head.
“They promised to give me back the only thing I ever loved.”
