Chapter 6 - The Unseen Watcher

I held my breath, terrified that Marcus had tracked us through the storm.
Lila tugged on my wet sleeve, pointing a trembling finger toward the wooden door.
Because she could not hear the storm, she could perfectly feel the heavy footsteps vibrating through the floor.
She held up two fingers, letting me know there were two men outside.
Damian forced himself to sit up, drawing his gun with a terribly unsteady hand.
“Get behind the counter,” he commanded silently, pointing to the rusted kitchen island.
I dragged Lila behind the metal counter, covering her body with my own.
The wooden door was suddenly kicked off its hinges, crashing violently onto the floor.
Flashlights pierced the darkness, cutting through the dusty air of the cabin.
“Sweep the room!” a harsh voice ordered.
Damian did not wait for them to find us.
He fired two rapid shots into the dark, striking the first man square in the chest.
The second man returned fire wildly, his bullets shredding the wooden walls above our heads.
I kept my hands clamped tightly over Lila’s ears, praying for a miracle.
Damian groaned loudly as a bullet grazed his ribs, dropping his weapon to the floor.
The surviving mercenary laughed, stepping into the cabin with his rifle raised.
“Marcus sends his regards,” the man sneered, aiming at Damian’s head.
Before he could pull the trigger, a throwing knife embedded itself deep into his throat.
The man dropped his rifle and collapsed, choking on his own blood.
Victor stepped through the ruined doorway, dripping wet and covered in mud.
“I told you I would buy you some time,” Victor grunted, pulling the knife from the dead man’s neck.
Relief washed over me so strongly that I nearly started crying.
“We need to get to the city hospital,” I told Victor urgently while showing him the remote.
“We only have fifteen minutes before the micro-bomb detonates.”
Victor nodded, helping Damian stand up and throwing the boss’s heavy arm over his broad shoulder.
“I have a chopper waiting in the clearing a mile from here,” Victor said.

We rushed out of the cabin, but the flashing timer on the remote suddenly leaped forward entirely on its own.
The timer skipped from fifteen minutes down to five.
