Chapter 4 - The Ghost From The Past

Lightning flashed across the dark sky, illuminating the face of the man standing in the road.
I stopped breathing entirely, my mind refusing to accept what my eyes were seeing.
“Marcus,” I whispered, the name tasting like ash on my tongue.
My husband was supposed to be dead, killed in a horrific factory fire before Lila was even born.
Damian pulled his gun and aimed it through the rain-streaked windshield.
“You know the leader of the rival syndicate?” Damian asked, gritting his teeth in pain.
“He is my husband,” I answered, feeling my entire world collapse into pieces.
Marcus walked slowly toward the car, holding an umbrella and smiling like a polite gentleman.
He tapped on the glass of my window, gesturing for me to roll it down.
“Hello, Clara,” Marcus said smoothly as the window slid down a few inches.
“I have missed you, my love.”
I stared at the monster wearing the face of the man I once adored.
“You faked your death and left me pregnant and penniless,” I screamed at him.
Marcus shrugged, showing absolutely no remorse.
“I had to build an empire, Clara, and a family would have only slowed me down.”
He looked past me, his cruel eyes landing on Damian, who was sweating and panting heavily.
“The poison is taking effect, I see,” Marcus chuckled darkly.
“Hand over the Volkov territory codes, Damian, and I will deactivate the bomb.”
Damian laughed, a harsh, bloody sound that rattled in his chest.
“I would rather blow up right here than give my city to a coward,” Damian spat.
Marcus sighed, pulling a heavy silver revolver from his coat.
“I was hoping you would say that,” Marcus replied coldly.
He aimed the gun directly through the window, pointing it straight at Lila’s chest.
“Give me the codes, Damian, or I kill the child.”
Before Marcus could pull the trigger, Damian slammed his foot onto the gas pedal.

The armored SUV surged forward, crushing Marcus against the side of the tree trunk.
I screamed as the car tore through the muddy ditch, crashing violently into the dense forest.
