Chapter 6 - Blood on the Marble

The cold reality of the traitor's words hung heavily in the freezing air of the underground vault.

This was no longer a tactical extraction mission; it was a ruthless, deeply personal execution ordered by a vindictive mafia boss.

Damiano stared through the thick glass at Elena, who was desperately shielding Mia with her own fragile body.

He needed a distraction, something sudden and violent enough to separate the unhinged guard from the deadly detonator.

"You realize Castri is already dead, don't you?" Damiano lied smoothly, his tone laced with absolute, unwavering confidence.

The guard hesitated for a fraction of a second, his confused eyes darting away from the explosive charges.

"I flooded the entire upper level with neurotoxin ten minutes ago," Damiano continued, taking a slow, calculated step forward.

"Your employer is currently choking on his own blood, which means nobody is left to pay your precious bounty."

"You're lying!" the traitor screamed, his thumb pressing down slightly on the sensitive red button in his hand.

In that microscopic window of distraction, a deafening gunshot echoed off the concrete walls of the massive vault.

The rogue guard stood perfectly still for a moment before a dark red flower bloomed in the center of his forehead.

He crumpled to the floor instantly, the remote detonator slipping from his lifeless fingers and clattering harmlessly against the stone.

Damiano spun around to see Rafael leaning heavily against the vault entrance, a smoking pistol gripped tightly in his bloody hand.

"Nobody threatens my boss's family," the wounded bodyguard muttered weakly before finally collapsing into unconsciousness.

Damiano rushed forward and kicked the detonator far across the room, ensuring the immediate threat was completely neutralized.

He swiftly punched the access code into the wall panel, his heart soaring as the heavy glass doors slowly slid open.

Elena stumbled out of the cell, practically falling into his strong arms as she sobbed in pure, overwhelming relief.

Mia ran out right behind her, wrapping her tiny arms around Damiano's leg and refusing to let go.

"You saved us, Daddy," the brave little girl whispered, her face buried deeply in the fabric of his ruined trousers.

Damiano knelt down, gently lifting the child and holding her close, feeling a strange, unfamiliar warmth spreading through his frozen heart.

For the first time since his own wife died, he felt a genuine, desperate reason to keep fighting and survive.

"The night isn't over yet, little one," he said softly, smoothing her messy hair with a gentle, trembling hand.

He carried her to where Elena was tending to Rafael, knowing they needed to escape before the toxic gas seeped downstairs.

They managed to drag the unconscious bodyguard into the hidden utility tunnel that connected the vault to the city's sewer system.

Damiano sealed the heavy hatch behind them, plunging the small group into pitch-black darkness accompanied by the sound of rushing water.

He turned on his tactical flashlight, illuminating the damp, narrow concrete path that would eventually lead them to absolute freedom.

Just as he took his first step forward, a terrifyingly familiar metallic click echoed from the shadows directly ahead.

"I always knew you would try to scurry away through the rat tunnels, Verrone," Don Castri's raspy voice mocked from the darkness.
