Chapter 3 - The Gala's Shadow

Damiano shoved Elena and Mia hard behind a heavy steel prep counter just as the first spray of bullets shattered the kitchen tiles.

He drew his custom sidearm in a fluid motion, returning fire with lethal precision before the gunmen could adjust their aim.

The lead attacker cursed as a bullet grazed his shoulder, forcing his team to take cover inside the narrow elevator shaft.

"Stay down and do not make a sound," Damiano ordered the terrified mother, his voice offering no room for argument.

He quickly assessed their perilous situation, knowing the industrial kitchen had only two exits, and both were likely compromised.

The gunfire outside the grand hall had intensified, indicating that his men were heavily engaged in a brutal firefight.

"Who exactly is the father of this child, Elena?" Damiano demanded, keeping his eyes locked on the metallic elevator doors.

Elena clutched little Mia tightly, her breathing ragged as she struggled to form the devastating words.

"Her real father was an undercover federal agent who got too close to the Castri family's international trafficking ring," she confessed between sobs.

"He hid the encrypted evidence drive inside Mia's favorite toy before they murdered him in cold blood."

Damiano's mind pieced the puzzle together instantly, realizing the magnitude of the danger he had just welcomed into his home.

The Castri family wasn't trying to assassinate him tonight; they were using the gala as a cover to retrieve the stolen evidence.

"They tracked the locket," Damiano muttered, remembering the blinking red device he had seen on the little girl's neck.

He reached over and violently ripped the silver necklace from Mia, throwing it across the room into a boiling vat of soup.

"We need to move to the panic room before they breach the secondary service doors," he instructed, smoothly reloading his weapon.

Suddenly, Rafael kicked open the main kitchen doors, his expensive suit covered in plaster dust and someone else's blood.

"Boss, we have a massive problem out there," Rafael panted, ducking low as another volley of bullets struck the walls.

"Don Marchetti's men just turned their weapons on our security team, coordinating their attack with the invaders."

Damiano felt a cold fury settle deep in his chest as the reality of the ultimate betrayal washed over him.

Two of the five major families had formed a secret alliance to wipe him out and secure the federal evidence in one bloody night.

"Get the woman and child to the underground vault immediately," Damiano commanded, stepping out from behind the counter.

"What are you going to do?" Elena cried out, her eyes wide with fear for the man who had agreed to be a father to her child.

Damiano slammed a fresh magazine into his gun, a dark, terrifying smile spreading across his handsome face.

"I am going to teach my guests some manners," he replied, turning toward the echoing footsteps approaching from the hallway.

Just then, the lights in the entire estate flickered and died, plunging the massive mansion into total, suffocating darkness.
