Chapter 1 - The King and the Pawn

The little girl stood before the mafia king, her faded blue cotton dress a stark contrast to the sea of designer silk and velvet.
Hundreds of elite guests held their collective breath, waiting for Damiano Verrone to unleash his legendary, merciless wrath upon the child.
Instead, the feared underworld boss slowly knelt down, the fabric of his custom Italian tuxedo pulling tight across his broad shoulders.
He looked deeply into her tear-filled hazel eyes, seeing a ghostly reflection of a tragic past he had buried deep within his soul.
"You want me to be your daddy," Damiano stated, his voice a low, dangerous rumble that barely carried past the first row of stunned onlookers.
"Just for one day," the little girl whispered back, her tiny, trembling hands clutching the crushed construction paper heart.
"My mommy is crying in the kitchen, and she said she wishes a strong man could save us tonight."
Damiano reached out, his large, scarred fingers gently taking the crooked drawing from her fragile grasp.
He stood up to his full, imposing height, effortlessly lifting the six-year-old into his powerful arms and settling her against his chest.
"Then you shall have a daddy for a day," he announced loudly, his cold gaze sweeping across the grand hall with a silent, lethal challenge.
Gasps rippled through the crowd as the city's most ruthless predator cradled the housekeeper's daughter like a precious jewel.
Don Silvio Marchetti narrowed his dark eyes from his position near the fireplace, his tight grip threatening to shatter his crystal whiskey glass.
The string quartet awkwardly resumed playing their classical tune, though the tension in the room was now thick enough to stop a speeding bullet.
Damiano turned his attention toward the servants' corridor, fully intending to find the mother who had raised such an incredibly brave child.
He wanted to know what kind of danger had driven a mere housekeeper to tears in his impenetrable fortress.
Before he could take a single, purposeful step forward, his trusted right-hand man materialized at his side.
Rafael Conti looked unusually pale, his eyes darting nervously around the glittering room as he leaned in close.
"Boss, you need to put the child down on the floor right now," Rafael whispered with fierce, barely contained urgency.
Damiano frowned, feeling the little girl wrap her small, trusting arms around his neck.
"Explain yourself, Rafael, before I lose my temper," the mafia boss warned softly.
"Look closely at the silver locket dangling from her neck," his bodyguard instructed, his hand hovering over his concealed weapon.
Damiano shifted the girl slightly, his blood instantly running ice-cold as his eyes locked onto the piece of jewelry.

The locket was slightly open, revealing a miniature, glowing red tracking beacon pulsing steadily in the dim light.
Before Damiano could react, the heavy iron gates of the estate outside suddenly blew open with an earth-shattering explosion.
