Chapter 4 - The Lockdown

The abrupt darkness swallowed the kitchen entirely, replaced seconds later by the eerie red glow of emergency backup lights.

Damiano moved with the silent grace of an apex predator, utilizing the shadows he had known since his violent childhood.

"Rafael, take them through the wine cellar," he whispered into the gloom, his eyes tracking the red laser sights scanning the room.

He could hear the heavy boots of Castri's men cautiously advancing past the destroyed service elevator.

Elena grabbed Mia's hand, following Rafael's quiet instructions as they crawled toward the hidden door behind the wine racks.

Little Mia suddenly stopped, refusing to move another inch as she looked back toward the towering silhouette of the mafia king.

"Daddy, you promised to stay with me for the whole day," the brave six-year-old whispered into the tense silence.

The nearest gunman instantly swung his rifle toward the sound of her innocent voice, his finger tightening on the trigger.

Damiano lunged across the open space, tackling the mercenary to the tile floor before a single shot could be fired.

He neutralized the threat with a brutal, silent strike to the throat, taking the man's suppressed rifle for himself.

"I always keep my promises, little one," Damiano murmured softly, tossing his pistol to a waiting Rafael.

"Get them downstairs now, and initiate the absolute lockdown protocol for the entire west wing."

Rafael nodded grimly, pushing the hidden door open and ushering the trembling mother and daughter into the dark tunnel.

As the secret panel clicked shut, Damiano triggered the remote switch on his watch to seal the estate's heavy blast doors.

Massive steel plates slammed down over every window and exit in the mansion, locking the remaining attackers inside with him.

He stepped out of the kitchen and back into the main corridor, stepping over the ruined remnants of his elegant gala.

The grand hall was now a war zone, with frightened guests trapped in corners while mobsters barked orders in the gloom.

Don Marchetti stood safely behind a wall of armed guards, smiling as he watched Damiano approach empty-handed.

"It is over, Damiano," the older mobster announced, his voice echoing loudly in the enclosed, echoing space.

"Hand over the housekeeper and her brat, and we will allow you to keep your pathetic little empire."

Damiano wiped a smudge of blood from his cheek, adjusting his ruined tuxedo jacket with deliberate, chilling calmness.

"You broke the sacred truce in my home, Silvio, and you terrorized a child under my protection," he replied smoothly.

"There is no empire left for you to negotiate with, because neither of you will survive this night."

Marchetti laughed out loud, signaling his men to raise their heavy weapons and aim them squarely at Damiano's chest.

"You are incredibly arrogant for a dead man," Marchetti sneered, confidently pressing a button on a small remote control.

Instead of the expected explosion, a metallic female voice echoed from the estate's hidden speakers, freezing the entire room.

"Lockdown sequence overridden; toxic gas deployment initiated in the grand hall," the automated system cheerfully announced.
