Chapter 2 - The Housekeeper's Secret

The deafening roar of the explosion rattled the crystal chandeliers, sending showers of glass raining down upon the panicked guests.
Screams echoed through the grand hall as billionaires and mobsters alike scrambled for cover behind overturned banquet tables.
Damiano did not flinch, instantly curling his large frame over the little girl to shield her from the falling debris.
"Rafael, secure the perimeter and get our men to the front doors!" he roared over the chaotic din.
He clutched the child tightly to his chest and sprinted toward the safety of the servants' corridor, his mind racing.
The pulsing red light on the girl's locket told him that this attack was not a random act of gang violence.
Someone had specifically used the innocent child to guide a heavily armed assault team directly to his impenetrable stronghold.
He burst through the swinging doors of the massive industrial kitchen, expecting to find his kitchen staff cowering in fear.
Instead, the room was entirely empty, save for a lone woman standing near the massive stainless steel refrigerators.
She wore the standard black and white uniform of his domestic staff, but there was nothing ordinary about her current stance.
Her dark hair was pulled into a messy knot, and her hands were trembling violently as she held a heavy butcher knife.
"Mommy!" the little girl cried out, wriggling in Damiano's arms as she reached out for the terrified woman.
Elena dropped the knife with a loud clatter, rushing forward to pull her daughter from the mafia boss's grasp.
"Mia, I told you to stay hidden in the pantry," she sobbed, burying her face in the little girl's messy hair.
Damiano stepped forward, his towering presence casting a long, dark shadow over the weeping mother and child.
"Your daughter asked me to be her father for the day, Elena," he said, his voice deceptively calm despite the gunfire erupting outside.
"I accepted the role, which means I am now responsible for protecting both of you from whoever is attacking my home."
Elena looked up, her beautiful face pale and streaked with tears of pure terror.
"You don't understand, Mr. Verrone, they aren't here for you," she whispered, backing away slowly.
"They followed us here, and they will burn this entire mansion to the ground just to get her back."
Before Damiano could demand an explanation, the heavy service elevator doors behind them dinged cheerfully.
The metal doors slid open to reveal three men dressed in tactical gear, aiming suppressed automatic rifles directly at them.
The lead gunman stepped forward, pulling down his mask to reveal a face Damiano recognized instantly.

It was Don Emilio Castri's eldest son, a ruthless killer supposed to be locked away in a federal maximum-security prison.
"Hand over the child, Verrone, and we might let you live to see tomorrow," the man sneered, raising his weapon.
