Gideon slowly raised his hands in the air, completely shocked by the fierce little girl.
"I am not going to hurt you, Ren," Gideon promised in a steady, calm voice.
He carefully took a step back to show her he was not a threat to them.
Ren’s hands were shaking violently, but she kept the rusted blade pointed directly at him.
"Everyone wants to hurt us," she replied, her voice breaking with exhaustion.
Nova quickly scrambled onto the floor and shoved the heavy hard drive back into her broken bag.
Gideon analyzed the situation, his brilliant mind racing to connect the impossible dots.
That specific hard drive was a prototype designed to store massive amounts of illegal blackmail data.
It was supposed to have been completely destroyed by the federal government three years ago.
"You ran away from a facility, didn't you?" Gideon asked gently.
Ren's eyes widened in sheer panic, confirming his worst suspicion without her saying a single word.
Gideon realized these children were not simple runaways; they were highly valuable targets.
"I can help you disappear, but you have to trust me," Gideon pleaded.
Before Ren could lower her weapon, a loud, violent pounding echoed from the front of the store.
