Chapter 8 - The Desperate Chase

Ramon slowly opened his calloused hands and let his heavy combat knife fall harmlessly to the dirt floor.

He kicked it away into the shadows, choosing to surrender rather than risk the innocent child's fragile life.

Julian smiled triumphantly and violently dragged the sobbing little girl toward the exit hatch at the far end of the tunnel.

Clara dropped to her muddy knees, weeping uncontrollably, begging him to take her life instead of her daughter's.

Julian completely ignored her tragic pleas, disappearing up the rusted metal ladder with Mia firmly in his grasp.

He left his remaining men behind with strict orders to ensure Ramon and Clara died down there in the dark.

But Julian had severely underestimated Diego's incredible resilience and unmatched lethality in close-quarters combat.

Diego pulled a hidden, serrated blade from his tactical boot and swiftly dispatched the remaining guards in a blur of violence.

The limited air supply in the collapsed tunnel was rapidly running out, making every breath feel like inhaling liquid fire.

Ramon completely refused to die quietly in the dark like a trapped, helpless animal.

He desperately searched the massive piles of rubble for any structural weak spot in the compromised concrete ceiling.

Clara miraculously noticed a rusty, abandoned maintenance pipe leading steeply upward toward the distant surface.

They quickly used a bent steel beam to aggressively pry the heavy iron grate off the narrow entrance.

They crawled desperately through the narrow, claustrophobic space until their hands and knees bled profusely.

They finally emerged into the cold night air in the middle of an abandoned, overgrown commercial train yard.

Ramon immediately pulled out a secondary, highly encrypted phone from his interior jacket pocket.

He checked the faint signal of the microscopic GPS tracker he had secretly slipped into Mia's pocket during the chaotic fight.

The tracking blip showed she was currently being held in a moving vehicle just one mile away.

However, the blinking red dot was heading straight toward the city's private international airstrip at a high rate of speed.

Julian was preparing to leave the country forever with the invaluable data and the child.

Ramon looked at Diego and Clara, his eyes burning with an intense, unstoppable fury.

"We are not letting him get on that plane," Ramon growled, chambering a round in a dead mercenary's rifle.

They sprinted across the dark train yard, driven purely by the adrenaline of a final, desperate rescue mission.
