Chapter 9 - The Devil's Deal

I stared blindly at the shocking confession written in my mother's journal.

If Noah was not her son, then why was he a perfect genetic match for the Sterling patriarch?

I flipped to the very last page of the journal and found a folded, official hospital document.

It was a stolen birth certificate from a private, highly illegal genetic laboratory.

Noah was not a natural-born child; he was a highly advanced, lab-created genetic clone of the dying patriarch.

My mother had kidnapped the clone to prevent her evil father from harvesting it for spare parts.

Suddenly, the electronic lock on the metal door beeped loudly, and the door swung open.

Alexander stood in the doorway, pointing a suppressed pistol directly at my chest.

He smiled coldly and said he knew I was hiding in the room the entire time.

He demanded that I give him the hidden location of the encrypted financial ledger my mother stole.

He promised that if I gave him the ledger, he would let me and my mother walk away alive.

I refused to speak, glaring at him with pure, unadulterated hatred.

Alexander aggressively grabbed my arm and dragged me down the hallway to the basement holding cells.

He threw me into a cold concrete room where my mother was chained to a heavy medical bed.

She was awake, looking incredibly pale and weak from the chemical sedatives.

Alexander aimed his weapon at her head and gave me exactly one minute to reveal the location.

My mother looked at me with tears in her eyes and slowly nodded her head.

She weakly whispered that the digital ledger was hidden inside the cheap plastic lining of Noah's favorite diaper bag.

Alexander laughed triumphantly, locking us inside the cell while he went to retrieve the bag.

My mother immediately sat up, completely dropping her weak and sickly act.

She reached into her hair and pulled out a small, sharp lockpick hidden inside her bobby pin.
