Chapter 9 - The Double

The bright, warm sunshine suddenly felt completely freezing as the horrific words echoed through the phone speaker.
I slowly lowered the device and frantically scanned the busy city street across from the hospital entrance.
Dozens of pedestrians were walking past, cars were honking, and the chaotic noise of the city completely drowned out my racing heartbeat.
Then, I saw her.
Standing in the deep shadow of a massive concrete parking structure was a woman wearing a dark trench coat and large sunglasses.
She was staring directly at me, a cruel, victorious smile completely visible even from a distance.
It was undeniably Margot.
"Dad," I gasped, grabbing his arm so tightly my knuckles turned entirely white. "Look across the street."
Dad turned his head, his eyes widening in absolute, paralyzing shock as he recognized the monster he thought was locked away.
"That's impossible," he whispered, his voice trembling violently. "I watched the judge sentence her."
The phone in my hand crackled with static, and Margot's sinister laughter echoed lethally in my ear.
"Madeline was always so eager to please, and she owed me a massive debt," Margot taunted arrogantly over the line.
"The authorities were so eager to close the high-profile case, they didn't even bother to check her biometric data thoroughly."
"I am completely off the grid, untouchable, and I still have access to the secondary accounts you don't even know about."
I felt a massive wave of nausea wash over me, realizing the nightmare was far from over.
Margot had flawlessly executed the ultimate deception, using her estranged twin sister as the perfect, identical scapegoat.
"What do you want, Margot?" I demanded fiercely, refusing to let her see me completely break down.
"I want the primary trust fund, and I am going to make your life an absolute, waking hell until you transfer it to me," she threatened softly.
Before I could respond, a sleek black town car aggressively pulled up to the curb, completely blocking my view of the parking structure.
The heavy tinted window rolled down, revealing my grandfather sitting in the back seat with a grim, deeply concerned expression.
"Get in the car, right now," he ordered forcefully, swinging the heavy door open.
Dad and I scrambled quickly into the luxurious vehicle, the heavy doors locking instantly with a loud, definitive click.
"I saw her," my grandfather stated smoothly, his piercing blue eyes completely fixed on the shadows across the street.
"I knew the woman in the courtroom lacked Margot's arrogant posture and ruthless demeanor."
He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a thick, classified intelligence dossier, tossing it onto the leather seat between us.
"I have been tracking Margot's hidden connections for weeks, anticipating a contingency plan like this," he explained rapidly.
"She is currently working with a highly dangerous, international criminal syndicate to launder the remaining stolen funds."
I stared at the thick dossier in absolute horror, realizing Margot was completely entrenched in a world far more dangerous than simple suburban fraud.
"She just threatened to make my life a living hell," I whispered, the raw fear finally breaking through my brave facade.
My grandfather leaned forward, his expression hardening into absolute, unwavering lethal resolve.
"She will never get the chance," he promised fiercely, pulling a suppressed tactical pistol from a hidden compartment in the door.
"We are not going to wait for the corrupt authorities to catch her, we are going to hunt her down ourselves."
The town car sped aggressively away from the hospital, completely abandoning our plans for a peaceful recovery.

We were heading directly into a massive, highly dangerous shadow war against a woman who had nothing left to lose.
And as I looked back through the tinted rear window, I saw Margot slowly stepping out of the shadows, pulling a sleek black phone from her pocket and dialing a number.
