Chapter 3 - The Lawyer

The stranger in the tailored suit did not look like a doctor or a hospital administrator.

He sat perfectly still, holding a sleek leather briefcase on his lap, his sharp eyes focused intently on my confused face.

"Good morning," he said smoothly, his voice deep and entirely devoid of any warmth. "My name is Arthur Vance, and I am your stepmother's defense attorney."

My heart hammered violently against my ribs as I desperately looked around the sterile hospital room for my father.

"Where is my dad?" I demanded, my voice trembling despite my best efforts to sound brave.

Vance offered a small, patronizing smile that didn't reach his cold eyes.

"Your father is currently at the precinct, dealing with the unfortunate fallout of last night's misunderstanding," Vance explained smoothly.

"He asked me to come here and speak with you about clarifying your statement to the police."

I stared at the lawyer in absolute shock, realizing he was trying to manipulate me while I was alone and vulnerable.

"It wasn't a misunderstanding," I stated firmly, gripping the edges of my hospital blanket. "She assaulted me."

Vance opened his briefcase and pulled out a thick stack of legal documents, placing them carefully on the rolling tray table.

"Your stepmother is a very prominent member of this community, and a public trial would be devastating for everyone involved," Vance continued, completely ignoring my accusation.

"She is willing to offer you a very generous financial settlement, far exceeding the value of your college fund, if you simply retract your statement and admit you tripped."

The audacity of his offer completely took my breath away.

Margot had violently injured my spine, terrified me, and tried to cover it up, and now she was trying to buy my silence.

"Get out of my room," I said coldly, pointing toward the heavy wooden door.

Vance did not move; he simply leaned forward, his expression hardening into a subtle, terrifying threat.

"If you proceed with these charges, Margot will ensure your father loses his job, his house, and any chance of a stable future," Vance warned softly.

"You will destroy his life over a momentary lapse in judgment."

Before I could process the heavy weight of his threat, the hospital room door swung open forcefully.

A tall, broad-shouldered woman wearing a sharp gray suit and a silver badge clipped to her belt strode into the room.

"Mr. Vance, I believe I explicitly told you to stay away from the victim," Detective Sarah Reynolds announced, her voice echoing with absolute authority.

Vance quickly gathered his documents, his patronizing smile returning instantly.

"I was merely checking on her well-being, Detective," Vance lied effortlessly as he stood up to leave.

Detective Reynolds watched him exit the room before turning her attention to me, her expression softening slightly.

"Are you okay?" she asked gently, pulling up a chair beside my bed.

I nodded, feeling a massive wave of relief wash over me in the presence of an actual ally.

"He said Margot is going to destroy my dad's life if I don't drop the charges," I confessed, my voice shaking.

Detective Reynolds sighed heavily, running a tired hand through her short hair.

"Your stepmother is a very dangerous woman, and she has powerful friends," Reynolds admitted quietly.

"But we have the 911 recording, and we have your medical records. The case is incredibly strong."

Then, the detective's phone buzzed loudly in her pocket, and she checked the screen, her face draining of all color.

"What is it?" I asked, panic rising in my chest as I watched her expression shift to sheer disbelief.

"The 911 dispatcher who took the call last night," Reynolds whispered, looking up at me with terrified eyes.

"He was just found dead in his apartment, and the master recording file has been completely wiped from the precinct's server."
