Chapter 2 - The Recording

The fluorescent lights of the urgent care room seemed to hum louder in the suffocating silence.
Margot stared at the locked cell phone in the nurse's outstretched hand, her perfectly manicured fingers trembling slightly.
"I am not unlocking his private property," Margot stated, attempting to regain her arrogant composure. "This is a medical facility, not a police interrogation."
The nurse simply nodded, her expression hardening into absolute, unwavering professional resolve.
"You are absolutely correct, ma'am," the nurse replied calmly, stepping over to the wall-mounted telephone. "Which is exactly why I am calling the police to report a suspected case of child abuse."
Margot’s face drained of all color, her arrogant facade completely shattering under the weight of the nurse's threat.
Dad stood frozen, looking like a man who had just woken up from a long, terrible nightmare.
"Give me the phone, Margot," Dad demanded, his voice suddenly steady and carrying an authority I hadn't heard in years.
Margot hesitated, glaring at him with pure venom, but she slowly handed the device over.
Dad unlocked the screen and opened the call history, his hands shaking as he saw the red icon indicating a connected emergency call.
The 911 dispatcher had stayed on the line for exactly forty-three minutes, recording the entire incident.
They had recorded the sound of the chair scraping, my terrified cries, and Margot's chilling threat to leave me on the floor until dessert.
The nurse immediately contacted the local precinct, and two uniformed officers arrived less than ten minutes later.
They separated us immediately, taking Dad and me into a private room while another officer questioned Margot in the hallway.
I told the female officer exactly what had happened, detailing the argument over the college fund and the violent way Margot had pulled the chair.
The officer took careful notes, her expression sympathetic but highly professional.
When the officers finally played the 911 recording back for Dad, he broke down completely, sobbing into his hands.
He had heard Margot's cruel words at the time, but hearing them replayed out loud, stripped of any context or excuses, destroyed whatever illusion he had left about his marriage.
The police arrested Margot right there in the urgent care center, placing her in handcuffs for felony child endangerment and assault.
As they led her away, she didn't look remorseful; she looked at me with absolute, murderous hatred.
The doctors performed an MRI on my spine, confirming a severe contusion on my lower spinal cord that was causing the temporary paralysis.
They assured me the feeling would return with physical therapy, but the emotional damage was entirely permanent.

Dad sat by my hospital bed all night, apologizing repeatedly and promising that things would change.
But when I woke up the next morning, Dad was completely gone, and a strange man in a tailored suit was sitting in his chair.
