Chapter 10 - The False Victory

The sleek black town car sped aggressively down the highway, putting miles between us and the terrifying encounter at the hospital.

My grandfather spent the entire drive making rapid, highly encrypted phone calls to his extensive network of private security contractors.

He was systematically shutting down every single avenue of escape Margot might attempt to use.

"The airports are completely locked down, and my team is currently raiding her known safe houses," he announced, hanging up the phone.

"She is completely isolated, out of money, and running out of time."

I leaned my head back against the plush leather seat, feeling a deep, exhausting sense of temporary relief wash over me.

We had completely turned the tables on the monster who had terrorized my family for years.

Dad was sitting next to me, his face pale but filled with a newfound, fierce determination to protect me at all costs.

"We are going to be okay," Dad promised softly, reaching out to gently squeeze my hand.

The town car finally pulled into the massive, heavily fortified gates of my grandfather's sprawling countryside estate.

Dozens of armed security personnel were patrolling the immaculate grounds, their presence offering a profound sense of absolute safety.

We walked into the grand foyer, the heavy oak doors closing behind us with a loud, reassuring thud that echoed through the mansion.

"You are completely safe here," my grandfather declared, handing his heavy wool coat to a waiting servant.

"The perimeter is entirely secure, and Margot will never be able to penetrate the defenses."

I let out a massive, shuddering breath, finally allowing myself to believe the nightmare was definitively over.

We spent the evening in the luxurious dining room, enjoying a peaceful meal devoid of any tension or hidden threats.

For the first time in five years, I felt like I was actually part of a loving, protective family.

After dinner, I walked slowly up the grand staircase to my massive, beautifully decorated guest suite.

I sat on the edge of the plush bed, looking out the large window at the peaceful, moonlit grounds below.

It was a total, undeniable victory against the darkness that had consumed my life.

I reached for the glass of water resting on the antique nightstand, feeling completely relaxed and entirely secure.

But as my fingers brushed the cool glass, a dark, chilling shadow suddenly detached itself from the corner of the room.

I froze completely, my heart instantly stopping in my chest as raw terror violently flooded my veins.

A tall figure stepped slowly into the moonlight, wearing a dark tactical uniform and holding a suppressed pistol directly at my head.

It wasn't Margot.

It was Arthur Vance, the corrupt defense attorney, and he wasn't acting like a lawyer anymore.

He looked like a highly trained, lethal assassin, his eyes completely dead and devoid of any mercy.

"Your grandfather’s security is truly impressive against outside threats," Vance whispered softly, a sinister smile spreading across his face.

"But it is completely useless when the threat was already invited inside the house years ago."

I desperately opened my mouth to scream for help, but before a single sound could escape my lips, Vance violently struck me across the temple with the heavy pistol.
