Chapter 3 - The Poisoned Clock

A sudden wave of intense, overwhelming dizziness washed over me, confirming my absolute worst and most terrifying fears.
The delicious blueberry pancakes my mother had served me were heavily laced with something incredibly toxic.
I stumbled backward blindly and leaned heavily against the kitchen counter to keep my shaking legs from collapsing.
"What did you put in my food?" I demanded, noticing that my words were already beginning to slightly slur together.
My mother proudly crossed her arms over her chest and smiled exactly like she had just won the lottery.
"Just a very heavy dose of your brother's highly potent prescription muscle relaxers," she explained with terrifying smoothness.
She stated that it would slowly drop my heart rate down until I simply fell asleep and never woke up again.
Judge Vance looked at my pale, sweating face and realized our escape timeline had just been violently cut short.
He slammed his fist down hard on the metal lockbox, instantly triggering a loud, high-pitched emergency security alarm.
The piercing, deafening sound caused Ryan and my father to instinctively drop their weapons and cover their ears in sheer agony.
Vance utilized the brief, chaotic distraction to grab my uninjured left arm and pull me forcefully toward the back door.
"Run, Emily, and do not look back for a single second!" Vance shouted over the blaring siren.
We sprinted frantically through the kitchen, narrowly dodging a heavy glass vase that my mother threw directly at our heads.
Vance kicked the glass patio door with his heavy leather boot, shattering the fragile pane into a million jagged pieces.
We burst out into the freezing morning air and scrambled desperately across the frost-covered grass of the backyard.
My legs felt like heavy lead weights, and the outer edges of my vision were rapidly turning pitch black.
"Keep your eyes completely open, the medical extraction team is waiting right in the alley," Vance urged me frantically.
We reached the wooden fence, and a massive black tactical SUV suddenly smashed right through the wooden gate.

Two men dressed in tactical medical gear jumped out and pulled my collapsing body into the back seat of the vehicle.
Just as the heavy car doors slammed shut, Ryan sprinted out of the destroyed house holding his father's loaded shotgun.
