Chapter 1 - The Name In The Shadows

The man in the dark wool coat stared at my rapidly swelling, purple fingers with a look of absolute, barely contained fury.
He did not ask for permission to enter my childhood home, nor did he wipe the melting winter snow from his expensive leather boots.
He simply pushed past Ryan's shoulder and walked directly into the center of our cramped, oak-paneled living room.
My father dropped his morning newspaper completely on the floor and stood up with a deeply threatening glare aimed at the intruder.
"Get out of my house right this second before I call the local police," my father demanded in a remarkably shaky voice.
The man completely ignored my father's empty threats and carefully set his black violin case on the dining table.
He unclasped the heavy leather portfolio he was carrying and pulled out a small, silver digital audio recorder.
"I am Judge Arthur Vance from the Grand Lakes Music Conservatory," the imposing man stated with a cold, authoritative tone.
"And I am standing here today acting on the direct legal behalf of Julian Sterling."
My mother gasped so loudly that she completely dropped her ceramic coffee mug onto the pristine hardwood floor.
The heavy mug shattered into a dozen sharp pieces, splashing hot liquid everywhere, but no one even dared to look at the mess.
I had never heard the name Julian Sterling spoken out loud in my entire life.
But the absolute, undeniable terror rapidly draining the color from my father's face told me everything I needed to know about this mystery.
"You have absolutely no right to speak that forbidden name inside this house," my father hissed, taking a highly aggressive step toward the judge.
Judge Vance did not flinch, nor did he take a single step backward to defend himself.
Instead, he calmly pressed the play button on his silver digital recorder and turned the volume all the way up.
My older brother's voice instantly echoed from the small electronic speaker, sounding crisp, cruel, and incredibly clear.
"If I forcefully break her right hand at breakfast, she misses the conservatory audition, and the Sterling trust legally defaults to us," Ryan's recorded voice laughed.
My father's recorded voice replied smoothly, instructing Ryan to make the brutal injury look like a clumsy, unfortunate accident.
I stared at my so-called family in complete and utter horror as the massive weight of their cruel betrayal washed over me.

"I have already sent this encrypted recording directly to the conservatory board and the local authorities," Judge Vance announced proudly.
Ryan lunged forward with a furious, animalistic scream, aiming a heavy wooden dining chair directly at the judge's head.
