Chapter 5 - The Fugitive Husband

My heart sank completely as the doctor delivered the devastating news about the blood supply.

My parents were entirely unwilling to help, and my grandfather's age and heavy medications disqualified him from donating.

The only other person in the world who could possibly save my daughter was my husband.

"Mark is a perfect match, but he is currently locked in a county jail cell," I cried out in absolute despair.

My grandfather immediately ordered his best defense attorneys to secure Mark's release, regardless of the financial cost.

The lawyers made frantic phone calls, but the corrupt local police chief was intentionally stalling the bailout paperwork.

Time was rapidly slipping away, and my daughter's pale skin was beginning to turn a terrifying shade of blue.

The heavy doors of the NICU suddenly slid open, and a figure covered in dirt and dark bruises stumbled into the room.

It was Mark, breathing heavily and bleeding from a massive cut above his left eyebrow.

I gasped loudly and reached out for him, completely bewildered by his sudden, miraculous appearance.

"The police chief was planning to have me killed in the holding cell, so I broke out," Mark explained breathlessly.

He had overpowered a corrupt guard, stolen a set of keys, and sprinted five miles across the city to reach the hospital.

He was officially a wanted fugitive, but he completely ignored the danger to his own life.

Mark immediately ripped off his torn jacket and extended his bruised arm toward the stunned trauma nurses.

"Take whatever blood you need to save my little girl," he demanded with fierce, undeniable authority.

The nurses quickly prepped his arm and connected the life-saving transfusion line directly to the baby's incubator.

I watched in pure awe as the rich, healthy color slowly began to return to my daughter's tiny cheeks.

Mark knelt beside my wheelchair, gently pressing his forehead against mine as we wept together in silent gratitude.

Our beautiful family was finally reunited, but the peaceful moment was brutally shattered by the sound of heavy boots echoing in the hallway.

A heavily armed tactical team of local police officers surrounded the glass walls of the NICU.

The corrupt police chief aimed his service weapon through the glass directly at my husband's chest.

"Mark Davis, you are under arrest for violently escaping police custody and assaulting a sworn officer," the chief shouted through a megaphone.

The armed officers breached the doors, aggressively dragging Mark away from the incubator while he was still connected to the blood bags.
