Chapter 2 - The Empty Room

I woke up to the steady, rhythmic beeping of a heart monitor in a cold, sterile recovery room.

My body felt impossibly heavy, completely numb from the chest down due to the massive doses of surgical anesthesia.

I immediately reached down to feel my stomach, and my heart completely stopped beating in my chest.

My swollen belly was entirely gone.

Panic seized my dry throat as I frantically pressed the call button clutched in my right hand.

A young nurse with sympathetic eyes hurried into the room and gently touched my trembling shoulder.

"Your little girl is alive, Sarah, but she is fighting for her life in the neonatal intensive care unit."

Tears of pure, overwhelming relief spilled down my cheeks at the news of my beautiful daughter's survival.

"I need to see my husband," I whispered, my voice incredibly raspy from the breathing tube they had just removed.

The nurse looked away, nervously adjusting the intravenous line connected to my bruised arm.

"Your father pressed formal assault charges against Mark for tackling him in the trauma bay."

"The corrupt local police arrested your husband and took him to the county jail without setting a bail amount."

I was completely alone in the hospital, defenseless against the monsters I unfortunately called my family.

The heavy wooden door to my recovery room slowly clicked open, and the nurse hastily excused herself.

My mother, Evelyn, stepped inside wearing the exact same designer dress she had worn to the birthday gala.

There was not a single drop of my blood on her perfect, incredibly expensive clothing.

She locked the door behind her and walked gracefully to the side of my hospital bed.

"You really embarrassed us tonight, Sarah," she said, her tone as casual as if discussing the weather.

"You almost killed my baby," I choked out, trembling with a mixture of raw grief and boiling rage.

My mother pulled a pristine white envelope from her designer handbag and tossed it casually onto my lap.

"I will drop the criminal charges against your violent husband on one very simple condition."

"You will sign a sworn affidavit stating that you clumsily tripped on your own dress and fell down those stairs by accident."

I glared at the woman who gave birth to me, finally seeing her for the absolute sociopath she truly was.

"I would rather die than protect him," I spat with every ounce of strength I had left.

Evelyn offered a cold, terrifying smile before delivering a sentence that shattered my entire world.

"That can be easily arranged, Sarah, especially since I already used the power of attorney to sign a do-not-resuscitate order for your fragile little premature baby."
