Chapter 8 - The Federal Play

I stared at the photograph of the district attorney accepting the bribe, my stomach twisting in disgusted knots.

My parents had not just bought the local magistrate judge; they had purchased the entire county justice system.

"You cannot buy everyone, Mother," I whispered, sliding the photograph back toward her.

"I do not have to buy everyone, Rebecca, I just have to buy the people who matter," Patricia replied arrogantly.

She picked up her glass of wine and took a triumphant, relaxed sip.

"Take the money, divorce James, and bring my granddaughter back to the family where she belongs," she commanded.

I stood up from the booth, looking down at the woman who had terrorized me for my entire life.

"You made one fatal miscalculation in your little criminal conspiracy, Patricia," I stated with absolute clarity.

Patricia raised an elegant eyebrow, completely unconvinced that I posed any real threat.

"You forgot that bribery of a public official crosses the line into federal jurisdiction," I explained with a cold smile.

I did not wait for her response.

I turned and walked out of the diner, leaving her sitting alone with her worthless millions.

I sat in my car in the parking lot and made a phone call I had been avoiding for years.

Sarah Jenkins was the Assistant Attorney General for the state, and she was my fiercest rival in law school.

We despised each other on a personal level, but I knew she was ruthlessly ambitious and completely unbribable.

Sarah answered the phone with a sharp, impatient tone.

"This better be important, Hutchinson, it is past midnight," Sarah barked into the receiver.

I laid out the entire conspiracy, detailing the assault, the altered video, the missing witnesses, and the bribery photograph.

Sarah remained completely silent as I finished recounting the nightmare my family had orchestrated.

"Taking down a billionaire family and a corrupt district attorney would guarantee my run for governor next year," Sarah finally mused.

"But I cannot launch a massive federal indictment based on your highly biased testimony alone," she added pragmatically.

"I need one piece of irrefutable, untainted evidence to secure the search warrants," Sarah demanded.

I felt a surge of panic, knowing my family had systematically destroyed every piece of proof I possessed.

"I will find something, Sarah, just give me twenty-four hours to produce it," I promised desperately.

I hung up the phone and drove back to the hospital, racking my brain for any overlooked detail.

I walked into Lily’s room and found James gently reading a storybook to our sleeping daughter.

The state-appointed monitor was dozing in a chair in the corner of the room.

I pulled James into the hallway and explained the impossible ultimatum the Attorney General had given me.

"We have absolutely nothing left, Rebecca," James whispered, looking completely defeated.

"They wiped the cloud, they bought the DA, and they chased your sister out of the state," he summarized miserably.

I leaned against the wall, sliding down to the floor as the crushing weight of failure finally broke me.

I began to cry, thick, heavy tears of absolute sorrow for the justice my daughter would never receive.

James knelt beside me and wrapped his strong arms around my trembling shoulders.

"We will take Lily and move to a different country, we will run away where they can never find us," James offered.

Suddenly, the elevator doors at the end of the hallway chimed loudly.

Two federal marshals stepped out of the elevator, moving with quick, terrifying tactical precision.

They walked directly toward us, their hands resting cautiously on their duty weapons.

"Are you Rebecca Hutchinson?" the taller marshal asked, looking down at me on the floor.

"Yes, I am," I answered, wiping my tears and standing up defensively.

The marshal reached into his tactical vest and pulled out a small, sealed plastic evidence bag.

Inside the bag was a perfectly intact, silver USB flash drive.

"Your sister Vanessa walked into the federal building an hour ago and requested full witness protection," the marshal announced.
