Chapter 1 - The Accusation

"I want this man arrested immediately for the aggravated felony assault of my three-year-old child," I said, making sure my voice carried into the crowded backyard.
The lead police officer stopped perfectly still in the center of my mother’s pristine kitchen.
He looked at my father, who was still holding the thick leather belt in his right hand.
Gerald dropped the belt onto the granite island as if the leather had suddenly caught fire.
"Now wait just a minute, officer," my father stammered, raising his hands in a gesture of false surrender.
"She is my daughter, and this is just a private family misunderstanding," he added with a nervous chuckle.
I stepped over the puddle of spilled soda and placed my body between the police and my bleeding child.
"I am a former state prosecutor, and I am telling you that man struck a toddler in the head with a weapon," I stated with absolute, cold authority.
My mother Patricia gasped loudly and clutched her pearl necklace.
"Rebecca, how dare you speak about your own father that way in front of the neighbors," she hissed.
I ignored her completely and focused on the paramedics who were rushing through the sliding glass door with a medical bag.
James fell to his knees beside Lily, his hands covered in our daughter’s blood.
The EMTs gently moved him aside and began checking Lily’s pupil responses with a small flashlight.
"She is unresponsive, and we have a deep laceration at the base of the skull," the paramedic yelled over his shoulder.
"We need to transport her to pediatric trauma right now," he ordered his partner.
I felt the entire world tilt on its axis as they loaded my tiny, fragile daughter onto a collapsible stretcher.
The lead police officer pulled out his handcuffs and stepped toward my father.
Gerald’s face went completely pale when the cold steel clicked around his wrists.
My brother Travis lunged forward to stop the officer, but a second cop put a hand on his taser and ordered him back.
"You are going to regret doing this to your own blood, Rebecca!" Travis screamed at me from across the kitchen.
I did not even look at him as I grabbed my purse and ran out the front door toward the waiting ambulance.
James climbed into the back of the emergency vehicle right behind the stretcher.
The sirens wailed to life, drowning out the shouting coming from my parents' front lawn.
I sat in the narrow ambulance seat, holding Lily’s cold little hand and praying to a God I had not spoken to in years.
James reached into his pockets with shaking hands, his face suddenly turning a sickening shade of gray.
"Rebecca, I need to call the hospital ahead of time to give them her medical history," he said frantically.
He patted down his jeans, his jacket, and the pockets of his dress shirt.
"Where is my phone?" James asked, his voice cracking with pure panic.
I told him he had just used it to call 911 from the kitchen floor.
James stared at me with wide, terrified eyes.
"I put it back in my pocket when the police arrived," he whispered.

The phone contained the exact timestamp of the assault and the audio recording of my father admitting he hit her over a soda.
"Someone at the party took it right out of my pocket in the chaos," James realized with absolute horror.
